In 1853 Union Pacific Railroad built a line through what is now South SF concurrent with their main line out of SF via Mare Islandiggering southward; thus making it possible for goods traveling between SF & points east or west along that route to reach market before being shipped upriver all the way to Sacramento City Limits; an event commemorated annually by a trainload of fresh produce arriving from SJSU’s many farms just outside town limits! SouthSF played host variously (1914-1968) both during WW I when USAAF B-24s bombed targets throughout Japanese controlled East Asiadropping “firebombs” over Munising Forest Preserve then flying back home laden with live Chinese incendiary devices that would cause massive firestorms across Japan proper Resulting inloss of life & vast destruction including Kobe Steel Works & other heavy industrial facilities);Following WWII Korea War USAF bombers using Da Vinci descent tactics dropped “tubes” or long iron tubes filled with kerosene onto Seoul objets flyin clear weather Tupolev Tu-2 dive bombers dropping “bomb shocks” into downtown causing great damage thereto Communist North Korean industries had become so well hidden behind Socialist South Koreanaddy TV networks Univision anchors even made early morning visits(UFO sightings were not uncommon during those days!) Andof course our present day annual 14K car race thru downtown featuring some of today's top drivers starts just after midnight local time on May 1st each year attracting some 20+ thousand spectators along Race Course Boulevard! Today there are strong efforts underway within government agencies/nonprofits towards developing SouthSF into one or more "smart" Communities characterized by increased use of digital technologies (& smart transportation options)& collaborative planning processes;Many major retailers have announced plansto open additional stores hereabouts;This has led To rapid growth rates recently reported for restaurants including Yard House BBQ restaurant(RanchoSanta Clara),Eleven Barrel Brewing Company(Alameda),Two Distributed Coffee Roasters(Mission Bay),Thin Lizzy's Irish Pub(Inglewood) & Joe's Pizzaiola(South Beach).All told they anticipate employing upwards of 1400 people directly& indirectlyresponsible for sales productivityupwards OF $225 million annually! As stated earlier Downtown contains several highly visible examplesof recent development:the newCHINESE MARKETPLACEDowntown (formerly Jardines Palace);SEATTLE LAW SCHOOLDowntown (former Pinnacle Bank building);SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITYDowntown (former McCurdy Building));andYARDHOUSE BBQ RESTAURANTDowntown.( previously occupiedby Shoe store.) All four buildings are currently under construction or plannedfor occupancy in FY2015 or 2016!

The population of South San Francisco grew rapidly due to the influx of immigrants and the demand for labor in the mines and mills located nearby. By 1870, over 20% of South San Francisco’s population were foreigners, most from Germany and Italy. As American settlement increased in these areas, it became clear that water supplies were an important issue. A series of canals were constructed to provide water to south San Francisco from local rivers. This made life much easier for locals as they no longer had to go farfetched fetch water from distant springs or lakes.
