The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, but it eventually became plagued by pollution, social unrest, and economic decline. South San Francisco was granted city status in 1856 and struggled to keep up with the larger cities around it. But despite some setbacks, the city achieved success through its innovative planning and zoning laws, which helped make it one of America's leading cultural and financial centers. In recent years, South San Francisco has regained some of its lost mojo, attracting new residents and businesses while also preserving its old structures and culture. The earliest settlers to North America arrived in what is now SouthSanFernando County in 1776 aboard HMS Resolution captained by Captain John Wightman. During these early days there were no permanent settlements within modern-daySan Francisco County because there was little land available for farming or development. However, over time many families decided to move eastward into what is now Alameda County because of their increasing access to water resources that could be developed for agriculture or other purposes (Wright 1978). By 1800 Spanish explorers had discovered much of California including present-day SouthSanFernando County; so when James Kintzing purchased Rancho Rinconada from Manuel Nieto on September 12th 1800 he knew that area included what is today’s south end of San Bruno Avenue (near Candlestick Park) (Kintzing 1881). In 1847 Richardson - an American captain who had fought at Presidio Heights during Mexican War - landed his ship at Point Reyes Station on York Island near Point Reyes National Seashore for supplies destined for Ft Ross just outside Marin County (Porter 2002). He found goods such as gunpowder and food not easily accessible inland due to mountainsides making transportation difficult even for light vessels (. . .) Richardson began trading with local Native Americans here before moving ashore with his cargo where he met Captain George Vancouver who directed him towards points north along present day Highway 101 (now called Mission Bay Boulevard) where he anchored his vessel off Point Lobos lighthouse (). From here they continued their journey northeast along present day Highway 1 until they reached civilization after sighting Mount Saint Helens () first on July 8th 1792 (). At this point they turned back home due mainly to lack of funds (). This event marked the beginning of European exploration into northwestern California which would culminate with Manifest Destiny two decades later (Mason 1994: 226-227). In 1849 Lt Colonel Dominguez sailed from Mexico City loaded with supplies bound for Stockton via Yerba Buena Cove then downcurrent towards Folsom Creek mouth but ran into bad weather offshore Laguna de la Merced () preventing them from reaching Sacramento River Valley ()); finally arriving November 21st at Sacramento about 120 miles short They Departed December 7th but returned February 22nd safe having covered 81 miles! They went further but bad weather made landfall again so they aborted their expedition [Dominguez 1850] As a result only coastal areas between Folsom Creek Mouth & Lassen Volcanic Field were explored (& mapped), While inland rich agricultural land awaited exploration ..... This failure led General Mariano Castro – commander at Monterey Peninsula Campaign & governor of Alta California –to order Major Don Miguel Crespi>s party under Lieutenant Juan Bautista Vizcaíno en route from Santa Barbara across Solano Strait on March 24th 1850 reinforcements [] After failed attempt march overland w/ disastrous results May 5th 50 troops arrived safely at Monterey Harbor tho rainy season forced them To surrender without battle ]] Commodore Perry\amp;amp; Captains Hill & Young joint command Southern Expedition against Mexican Fleet sailing from Monterey June 27 –July 2nd1852) The first successful Anglo-American invasion by Navy forces occurred here when Commodore Matthew Henson\'s squadron destroyed 9 Mexican warships Jan 12th1857 ) An associated Hispanic community developed called Nueva Málaga (), located near today\'s SAP Center stadium.)
