After years of decline due to high gas prices and changes in technology which have impacted many industries throughout Silicon Valley, South San Francisco experienced a resurgance beginning in the late 1990s as new programsmatic development efforts materialized along key corridors including First Street-Market/Folsom Streets corridor between City Hall Plaza and Interstate 280/First Avenue (known today as Embarcadero), starting at City Hall Plaza eastward along First Avenue from Interstate 280 westward toward Fort Mason Finally completed was Mayor Willie Brown's transformative program called "The Revolution," which aimed to revitalize downtown south side neighborhoods such as Visitacion Valley (later renamed Mission Dolores) with city wide programming that focused on arts & culture education projects like art walks & jazz concerts Today there are multiple districts within SouthSanFrancisco - Financial District (between Market/Folsom Streets corridor northward towards Polk Street), Bernal Heights (southwest corner of Bernal Heights Boulevard eastward towards Valencia Street), midtown nicknamed SoMa or simply Midtown - espresso shops flanked by high rise buildings filled with startups & tech companies - several major urban renewal initiatives have been revived such as The Mission Creek Restoration Program during recent years culminating with rebranding of entire district under one name: "Mission"
