One such product was the Optical Chain Gunsight Device (OCGD), which allowed crews on warships to see targets at very close range without getting wet or damage their uniforms. South San Francisco, California is a city located in San Francisco County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 77,145. It is the second most populous city in San Francisco after San Jose and the fifth most populous city in California. The City of South San Francisco was incorporated on September 15,1895. The estimated population for 2015 was 78,545 The history of South San Francisco goes back to 1849 when James Moulton bought Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas from José Joaquín Cámpora y Peralta. In 1852 he sold it to Benjamin Fenton who named it “Fenton” after himself and his father-in-law – General John Balfour whom he had met while commanding British forces at Buena Vista Heights near Mexico City during the Mexican–American War. On May 20th, 1853 Fenton sold Rancho Rinconada to Rafael Arguelles who called it “Arguello” which means “redoubt” because of its red earth soils that were used for referencing surveystakes and other land grants naming boundaries etc…. Arguelles also purchased 8 large acacia trees which still stand today on North Beach Road east of downtown south of Market Street…..In 1857 Pedro Menéndez de Avila acquired Rancho Moraga from Manuel Nieto but never moved into the area until 1865 when he purchased 640 acres including what is now Downtown SouthSanFrancisco from Nicholas Negroponte……Menéndez de Avila built a small adobe house on what is now First Street between Mission and Polk Streets…………..He also built a small chapel on Park Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets……………Avila sold his holdings to José Joaquín Cámpora y Peralta on December 16th, 1865………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Cámpora renamed it “Rinconada” meaning “hillocks or foothills”…………….On January 17th, 1886 Santiago Carrillo received title to 5 square miles (12 km²) northeast corner of Rinconada extending as far north as Russian Hill………………………………………………………………………………………………………..From this original purchase by Santiago Carrillo there has been continuous ranching activity taking place with some families having owned all or part of SouthSanFrancisco since before Spanish settlement

South San Francisco was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The area now known as South San Francisco was part of Rancho Santa Clara, granted to Carlos Márquez in 1795. In 1836, during the Mexican-American War, General José Joaquín Carranza attacked and captured Mexico City, leaving much of California under American control. When California became a United States territory in 1850, South San Francisco fell within the newly created city of San Francisco. In 1863, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in nearby Sacramento County, many people from South San Francisco came to prospect for treasure. The town slowly grew and developed into an important commercial center after its location near both rich veins of gold and water sources made it a desirable place to settle. The arrival of Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution on November 6, 1920 made South San Francisco an independent city with its own government and budget.
