They named their discovery "Olivia" for Queen Victoria and Richardson became proprietor of the property. In 1860, gold mining operations were started onsite by James Waddell and other investors under the name "Werthers". However, within a few years most of the gold had been depleted and Waddell sold his interest in 1862 to John Sutter. South San Francisco experienced significant growth from 1861 until 1865 during American Civil War efforts to control Mexican territory east of the Golden Gate Bridge. This period also saw an increase in population as workers crossed into California from Northern California looking for work on expanding ranches and mines out west. During World War II (1939-1945), South San Francisco served as an ammunition dump due to its strategic location at right angles to several major highways leading into Los Angeles County and Southern Californian cities such as Ventura County and Santa Barbara County
