Alameda named his property Sanchez Hill after José Sanchez y Castro – Mexicanvretero (politician) under Spanish rule who had helped win independence for Mexico from Spain – but this name never caught on among local residents. Alameda built a small cabin near where he currently stands as headquarters for Southern Pacific Railroad's Peninsula Division until his death in 1895; his son City Councilman Lorenzo Alameda served as president of Southern Pacific Railroad from 1919 until his death in 1951.
