In 1868–69 two German immigrants named Rolfe and Jakob Engelhardt built a sawmill in South Mission that became one of the most important lumber mills in California. In 1886 an act passed by Congress renamed South San Francisco "South Bay City". By 1893 it had become part of the city ofSan Francisco and continued to be called South San Francisco until 1959 when it reverted to its original name south of Market Street. During World War II (1939-1945), many Japanese American citizens were interned in nearby Tule Lake because they were suspected of being war criminals or members of Japan's Imperial Forces who had collaborated with America during World War II.
