The site for the new town was a part of Rancho Santa Clara which had been granted to Pedro Costilla in 1776. On February 14, 1850, the town passed an act to become a city and it became one on July 25 of that year. The first mayor of South San Francisco was Lorenzo J. Alameda who served from October 2, 1850 to September 3, 1851. The first City Council consisted of seven members with Mayor Alameda serving as chairman. In 1862 the City annexed portions of Daly City and Inglewood while also becoming a County within California. On November 5, 1916 this County was merged into what is now Los Angeles County and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa became its first governor
