It lies on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is bounded by the City of San Rafael to the south and west, Bayview Heights to the north and east, Potrero Hill to the north-east and Mission District to the south-west. SouthSanFernando is also home to one of Northern California's largest concentration of biotech companies. The city has been known for its annual "March for Science" protests against scientific censorship. The first European settlement in what is now South San Francisco began with Spanish traders in 1776. In 1846 it became part of Mexico after Californias acquisition from Mexico during the Mexican–American War. After being returned to U.S. sovereignty in 1848, SouthSanFernando became a part of Santa Clara County as part of Proviso Act No. 8 (1850). On April 15th 1870 USGS agent Wm Henson recorded at mile post 1st (now milepost 16) that “Pleasant land adjoins this Post which conforms very closely unto recommended spot by Government Lands Surveyor General” with an accompanying map that shows: “lot composed mostly forest with some buildings but no watercourse fronting upon it; bounded on three sides by hills rising abruptly out of bayou & extending northerly beyond said lot; on fourth side there appears to be a small stream running thence into bayou’d plain beyond said lot". This plat included what are now Bernal Heights and Dogpatch neighborhoods along Castro Street between Market Avenue & Powell Street

South San Francisco was first settled in 1847 by American citizens who immigrated from New England. The town was originally named Portsmouth, but it changed to South San Francisco because the nearby hills were called South Point and North Point. In 1851, the General Mariano Vallejo Railroad was built through the town, and soon South San Francisco became a center for commerce and transportation. The first school in South San Francisco was founded in 1852 and served as a primary educational institution for African Americans until 1955. In 1870, the California State Normal School opened in South San Francisco, becoming one of the state's most prominent educational institutions. After various fires destroyed many of the buildings in downtown South San Francisco between 1901-1902, new construction began on what is now California Hall at First Street and Mission Avenue. This building housed both an intra-school library (1892-1900) and later an office building (1905). In 1916, when United States President Woodrow Wilson visited South San Francisco for his second presidential campaign rally, he addressed a large crowd that had gathered near Market Street corner about three blocks south of State street. At that time, there were no sidewalks or crosswalks in this part of town so cars had to be backed up several feet to get around obstacles such as buildings or trees. A plaque on California Hall commemorates Wilson's visit and says: " PRESIDENT WOODROW WILLIAMS - SPEECHES HERE IN SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO 1914" In 1922-1923 work began on a new city hall which would serve as the temporary home of City Council meetings until a permanent location could be found. The first floor of this building housed City Hall Annexes No 1 through 3 while construction continued on floors 4 through 7 which eventually became known as Civic Center Plaza due to its proximity to City Hall Annexes Nos 1 through 3. The new city hall opened on October 20th 1923 with Mayor Edwin Euenberger presiding over its dedication ceremonies. It replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed by fire in 1915.
