The area that is now South San Francisco was occupied by Native Americans for many years. They named the area "Tahoe" because it was a high mountain range. In 1775, Spanish missionaries arrived in what is now South San Francisco and began Christianityization of the local tribe of Mission Indians. The mission was originally called La Mesa de la Merced, which means "the mouth of the Mercy." In 1821, when California became a United States territory, the land around South San Francisco became part of Rancho Santa Clara de los Amigos. This rancho included most of what is now South San Francisco and portions of Daly City and Emeryville. In 1847, gold was discovered in nearby Sacramento County and prospectors started arriving in search for the rich mineral wealth. By 1850, there were over 100 miners operating in South San Francisco. The first town on the site was founded by Captain John Cranch in 1851 as Camp Folsom near present-day North Beach. Over time, other towns were founded throughout southern SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY: Alameda (1853), Fremont (1856), Hayward (1857), Richmond (1858), Castro Valley (1859), Portola Valley (1860) and Vallejo (1862). South San Francisco quickly became an important transportation hub due to its location at the junction of several major routes including Telegraph Road and Market Street. Additionally, because it had a large population base with easy access to goods available from neighboring towns during boom timespadding mills along both roads generated significant profits for entrepreneurs who built businesses such as Cheese Merchant’s Grocery Company & Saloon No 4 located at 8th Street between Geary Boulevard & Kearny Avenue 1903-1907; Hotel California 1907-1911; Mrs Leland Stanford’s Menasha Spa 1912- 1913; W Hotel 1915; Panama Pacific International Exposition 1915.] During World War II much production took place at nearby Donner Strait Naval Ammunition Plant on Treasure Island where munitions could be easily transported across open water without being damaged or lost among enemy forces loyal to Japanfifteen miles away from downtown SAINT JOHN’S PLACE] . After American victory over Japan in 1945 various infrastructure projects were undertaken such as improve Highway 101 south outlying areas which led to redevelopment including: Fillmore District 1965-1971; HaightAshbury District 1967-1978; Financial District 1979-1981] After years of growth new neighborhoods emerged including: Cambria Heights 1978-1982; Western Addition 1982-1984]; Financial District 1984], Golden Gate Park 1985], Embarcadero 1987], SoMa 1989].
