In 1865, when US coast guard forces burned down part of Fort Point on the Golden Gate Bridge during the Civil War, Lieutenant Colonel John Brougham decided to rebuild the fort at what is now Fisherman’s WharfBAYrockinGators on wharf property near Bushbalm Saloon & Grill took up residence until 1892 when they sold their holdings to James Fenton (1802-1912) who renamed it Fenton Square after himself. In 1912, South San Francisco voters passed a resolution asking Governor Samuel Seabrook if he would create a town in south SF for workers commuting into downtownSan Franco because “workers are necessary not only for our production but also for all the needs which must be attended thereto without which our industries cannot go forward under present conditions; we need men hereto help build up this great metropolis [of] ours” SF City Councilmember Jesse Jones then convinced Governor Brown to sign legislation creating South Beach neighborhood within southSF boundaries with streets named Fillmore AvenueN/A Streets named after Governors Seabrook or his successors have been proposed since then including: George DeForest Bryant (1916-1988), Edmund Sanger (1945-1996), Dianne Feinstein (2006-) – however no action has been taken

In 1821, California became a part of the United States and the mission remained an important center for Catholic missionary work until 1830.During that time, large numbers of Anglo-Americans came to California looking for land to settle. Many of these men founded towns and villages along the coast such as Santa Cruz, Daly City, Monterey Peninsula, and Stockton. Over time, these towns grew into significant cities with their own economies and social systems.
