In 1557, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered new lands in the Iberian Peninsula and named them after himself, Magellan's Land (Spanish: Islas Malvinas). The first European to sight and explore these islands was Spanish navigator Juan Fernández de Oviedo on October 12, 1519. After landing on Santa Cruz Island on February 16 of that year, he noted a "very high mountain" rising to "some great height" which he called El Hierro ("The Iron Mountain"). On July 14 of the same year, he reached the summit of this mountain and named it Tierra del Fuego after King Ferdinand II of Spain. This naming convention continued until 1789 when Viceroy Manuel de la Hoz renamed all North American Isles Terra Uruguay after his dominions in South America (the current name for Argentina). In 1814 Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed percussion caps as an alternative to shot for firing artillery shells from ships. These containers held 1/2 pound (0.20 kg) charges of powder which could be released with a Provided keyhole device to cause a lethal explosion inside the container at close range; this type of explosive shell was also called a conical cap or cone projectile. The first percussion caps were made from wheat flour milled into small pellets which had then been soaked in salt water before being placed into a vat where they burst into flame upon impact with something hard such as stone or wood

From this invention, ammunition development continued through the 1800s and into the 1900s
South San Francisco was founded in 1849 by gold prospectors looking for new mining areas in the area. The town quickly became a major commercial and cultural center, becoming known for its Saturday night market, its colorful architecture, and its large population of African Americans. South San Francisco also played a significant role in California's early statehood, as it was the first stop on the Oregon Trail. The town declined during the 1860s and 1870s as gold prices dropped and trade dwindled; however, it regained some of its former prosperity during the Gold Rush of 1848-49. In 1875, South San Francisco joined with other nearby towns to form the City of South San Francisco. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century and reached a peak population of around 30,000 in 1900. However, following World War I and the postwar slump, South San Francisco slid into decline until it reached a low point in the 1920s. Since then, however, it has steadily rebuilt itself as an important cultural and economic center due to its growing diversity (including both African American and Asian populations), strong community spirit, high quality schools (including one of America’s top public universities), and expanding infrastructure projects such as light rail systems.
South San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1777 as part of Rancho San Pablo. The first permanent settler in South San Francisco was José Nieto, who arrived in 1779. Nieto and his family built a ranch house on the site of today's Golden Gate Bridge.
