In 1857 two companies of United States Marines landed atclaiming title to the Missions Bay Presidio as their own. As early as 1865 Captain James W. Higginson had established a small military post on the wharf at Portsmouth Square near Fremont Place after suppressing an uprising there against British rule; this post became known as Fort Higginson during Mexican rule. By 1870 about 60% of all goods exported from California were shipped through Ports of Embarkation located along what is now Market and Polk Streets.
