The population was 34,554 at the 2010 census and it is the third most populous city in Los Angeles County after downtown LA and Vernon. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now South Pasadena were Spanish Franciscans who arrived on horseback from Baja California in 1821. They founded a mission called San Fernando Rey de los Reyes (St James' Cathedral). In 1847, Mexican Americans led by José Joaquin Cevallos established Rancho Santa Clara near present-day White Sands Boulevard and Arroyo Seco Creek. This area became known as “South Pasadena” because of its location within southernmost Orange County. The rancho was sold to American citizens in 1881 by Don Miguel Tejanos for $2 million dollars. In 1909, real estate mogul Julius Rosenwald purchased land east of White Sands Boulevard and south of Sepulveda Avenue for what would become South Pasadena Civic Center which still stands today. Rosenwald named his new community "South Pasadena" because of its original location within Southern Los Angeles County between Glendale and Carson City Hills geographical divisions. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were forced into concentration camps near Long Beach while their families were rounded up and sent to South Pasadena where they were housed in stockades behind Magnolia Manor until they were finally released in 1945. The post-war era saw an influx of Korean Americans with businesses opening up around Wampum Way and Manchester Drive which are now known as Koreatown/South Park Avenue north of Gettysburg Road west of Interstate 5th Street. In 1969, when South Park was annexed by neighboring North Park as part of the citywide redevelopment program following Rampart Heights fire damage caused by riots that year, Mayor Ralph Yarborough ordered that "Pasadena/South Park be renamed South Pasadena". Since then, much has changed around South Park including the annexation of several other neighborhoods including Canyon Downs to the north; Evergreen Gardens to the east; University Village to the south; Midtown Koreatown to the west; and Newland Hills northwest of I-5th Street

They named their town after their home state of Texas, which at the time was part of Mexico. South Pasadena quickly became a popular location for people looking for a quiet retreat from the city. Lorenzo Wright is credited with starting the local paper biz in South Pasadena and building one of the first schools in the area.
