He had built there a small town in 1827 called La Crescenta, which he named for his home country of Crescentas in Spain. In 1881, south Pasadena's incorporation as a city followed the annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas including Westminster and parts of Beverly Hills and Hollywood. South Pasadena became one of the wealthiest cities in Southern California due to its ties to both commercial and professional interests within its borders. South Pasadena is located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 23,898. The city was founded in 1909 by James Irvine and became a city on December 12 of that year. South Pasadena’s growth started with the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1912. The railroad brought workers to town from Southern California and made it easier for people to get work and buy goods. In 1916, the South Pasadena City Council established a park system called Park Boulevard which included South Pasadena Stadium (now known as Rose Bowl Stadium). The 1920s were a time of great change for South Pasadena. A new generation of people came to town and changed what it means today. Many famous movie stars lived here during this time including Fenton Hewitt, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Humphrey Bogart. In 1928, Mayor George Wirtz created Park Boulevard as an official street in honor of these celebrities. Park Boulevard quickly became one of South Pasadena’s most popular streets because it was full of delicious food stores, theaters, cafes and other businesses that attracted locals and visitors alike. In the 1970s, South Pasadena experienced rapid growth due to development around Interstate 5 (I-5) which connected Los Angeles with Orange County and Phoenix Arizona*. This development led to more jobs for local residents and increased traffic congestion on Park Boulevard* (*See map below). In order to ease traffic congestion on Park Boulevard*, Mayor George Wirtz decided in 1973 to make changes to the way things were done in South Pasadena* (*See ordinance below). These changes included turning around lanes at intersections so that cars could flow through them instead of stoping at each intersection; adding bicycle lanes along Park Boulevard; reducing car parking at various intersections; making sidewalks wider; and increasing funding for Parks Department programs.* (*See ordinance below*) Since then, many exciting improvements have been made to South Pasadena* (*See ordinancebelow*) such as: -Park Blvd has seen several updates throughout its history including being widened into two lanes between Flower Street/Shaw Avenue & North First Street/Cochise Road ; addition of bike lanes between Flower Street/Shaw Avenue & North First Street/Cochise Road ; establishment of smaller parks dotting different parts of town ; increase in funding for Parks Department programs *(* See ordinance below *)
In 1871, Los Angeles was founded on the site of what is now South Pasadena. The original area was part of Rancho Bernardo, and the first person to live in what is now South Pasadena was José María Cámpora. In 1876, a group of investors purchased 5,000 acres (2 km2) of land north of the present day intersection of San Pedro Avenue and University Boulevard for $5 per acre. They named their new community "South Pasadena." The community grew quickly due to its close proximity to Los Angeles and its easy access to transportation. In 1916, South Pasadena incorporated as a city.
