In 1907, John Sutter founded the town of South Pasadena on land he acquired from Mexican traders for $10 per acre ($4 million today). At first, just 20 residents lived inSA pueblo which included a schoolhouse, jail and post office with only three mail carrier routes because there was no phone service or internet access then! Today’s downtown SA pueblo still retains some original buildings dating back to 1907 including: The Masonic Temple (built 1905), The Presbyterian Church (1897), Earle’s Drug Store(1909) & The George Laughlin store(1928). In 1954, after becoming part of Los Angeles County through Proposition 13®, SA pueblo voted to change its name back to “South Pasadena” when all other city councils within LA county followed suit!
