South Pasadena, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 24,824 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena is home to many famous people including American actor and comedian Steve Martin, singer Jewel and actress Eva Longoria. The community has also been called "the most beautiful place on earth". The first Europeans to arrive in what is now South Pasadena were traders from Spain who came in 1827. They named their new settlement Vizcaya after Viscount John Vizcaya's estate in Spain. By 1830, the area around South Pasadena had become a part of Rancho Los Nietos de la Ribera which was owned by Patricio Alvarado. In 1832, Alvarado sold his holdings to James Hahn and George Hearst who organized what would become Hearst Corporation. One of Hearst's first investments was land that he bought in 1877 from José Joaquin Cisneros for $3 million dollars. Cisneros had founded Bakersfield Weekly News newspaper with another businessman, Don Miguel Barranca y Canessa-Lobos-Perez and ran it until his death in 1898. When Hearst finalized his purchase of the paper from Cisneros' heirs, he changed its name to Southern California Mirror Company newspapers (SCM). In 1907, when South Pasadena's taxable population numbered only 2 people, incorporation as a city took place under the name “Pasadena” because it seemed like an easier name than simply “South Pasadena” given that both communities lay within one municipality boundaries. On November 10th 1906 by resolution of City Councilmember Harry Mathers III then Mayor Calvin Heineman gave effect to this request when they established: "That sections A & B of Palmdale Street be annexed into the Municipal limits; thence southward along said palmdale street past Mrs Lillian Barron's house to intersecting Main Street; thence eastward along said main street past Mr Wm Hahn's house to intersecting Griffith Avenue." On February 1st 1907 regular zoning proceedings were held before Planning Commission member Julius Rosenwald pursuant to subdivisional Plan No 7-A which designated portions of Chavez Ravine Road between Maple Avenue and Azusa Street as being zoned industrial/residential for “the production or storageof food items” with six dwelling units per acre lot not exceeding one story high with side walks facing Mecca Drive and Allendale Boulevard outbuildings immediately adjoininng said lots hereinabove described forage crops wagons etc., but no less than two stories high without any side walk over Mecca Drive; This plan also included plans for erection of residences on Lots Nos 5 & 6 adjoining Azusa Street starting immediately northeast thereof as shown on plat map attached hereto [sic] making Eastbound Main Streets Acton Boulevard & Springdale Boulevard cross streets hereinbelow." After these initial deliberations there wasn't much action taken on annexation proposals other than minor changes made until 1912 when local realtor Hiram Sibley recommended that annexation be offered for consideration once more due largely to increased housing prices associated with World War I veterans returning home from abroad bringing their houses back into use as barracks or homes while stationed overseas Those efforts failed again due largely to objections from property owners near Century Park who saw potential development there rather then at their edge where they could see military activity

South Pasadena is located in San Gabriel County, California. It was founded in 1881 by Antonio Perez and his brother Lorenzo as a small agricultural community. The town developed rapidly after the opening of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1886, and by 1910 South Pasadena had over 10,000 residents. The town's growth continued through the years, and during World War II South Pasadena became an important bombing target because of its large population of Japanese-Americans. However, during the war South Pasadena experienced a decline in population due to the closing of local businesses. In fact, according to 2000 census data, there were only 709 people living in South Pasadena when the census was taken. In recent years however,South Pasadena has seen a resurgence as a residential community. In 2013 it passed USDOT's " Low Carbon Home Rule" which called for 20% carbon emissions reduction within five years for all new housing developments built within city limits since 2009 inside any given decade starting with 2020. This has led to new development including several high-end luxury homes being built on nearly 5 acres of parkland adjacent to downtown South Pasadena. Additionally,the city has also renovated several public services including parks and libraries which have helped changeSouthPasadena into what it is today - a vibrant community with many opportunities for cultural exploration and economic growth
