South Pasadena is a small town located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Pasadena–Midway City area. One of the earliest settlements in what would become South Pasadena was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1777 as Rancho San Diego de la Encina. In 1871, Southern Pacific Railway built a line from Pomona to South Pasadena and named it after Rancho San Diego De la Encina. The railroad left South Pasadena in 1951 and the community never regained its former prominence as an agricultural center until recently when it has experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for southern Los Angeles County. The first post office in South Pasadena opened on November 3, 1876 and was renamed Garden Grove. On July 15, 1907, it changed its name to South Pasadena and became an independent city under the leadership of Mayor John Travolta on December 12, 1907. South Park began developing rapidly after World War II when many servicemen returned home to build new homes or return their vecinos (neighbors) who had vacated during World War II because of food shortages or political instability in Japan following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which turned entire Japanese cities into ash pits with intense radiation exposure levels reaching up to 100 times that found outside Hiroshima and more than 6000 times that found inside Nagasaki! Many people also moved out of fear of riots or race riots that could have erupted if they had remained living close to military bases or other areas with large Black American populations then present throughout Southern California! In 1952-1953 six housing developments were started near downtown called "The Village" by developer Roy Drake: Turtle Bay Village development (later known as Dove Canyon), Aqua Ridge Apartments (later known as Crestwood Towers), Belle Terrace cottage Villas (later known as Westchester Place), Monterrey Place (later known Ascot Place), and Pee Wee's Playland where children played until school let out for lunch! Although these projects did not achieve much due to opposition from nearby Koreatown who felt they were encroaching on their territory – some say because Koreans were not allowed into white neighborhoods – they did start a trend which would continue through the 1970s with developers building larger complex single family homes near shopping centers while smaller apartment buildings continued to be built throughoutSouthPasadena! A new shopping mall called Northridge Center was planned adjacent to Interstate 5 but never built; this led to allegations by local residents that mall developers colluded with federal officials involved in illegal government corruption including kickbacks from construction contracts! Eventually investigations revealed FALSE evidence suggesting connections between Northridge Center Developers LLC and members of LA Unified School District management team regarding alleged illegal contract violations!! A settlement totaling $27 million was reached involving both individuals involved & school district management team members identified!!! This event initiated major changes within LAUSD management which continue today!!
In 1847, the Palouse Indians were forced to leave their lands in southern Pasadena and move north to the Oregon Trail. A group of settlers, led by John Sutter, arrived in what is now South Pasadena in 1851. They founded a small town on land that was donated by Captain Gabriel Goldsborough. The town was named for General James Shields Goldsborough, who had been killed during the Mexican-American War. After years of growth and development, South Pasadena incorporated as a city on November 3, 1912.
