South Pasadena, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Pasadena is located near both Ontario and Orange county lines. The first people to live in what would become South Pasadena were the Tongva people who arrived from Southern California around 1821. They built their hunting and gathering camps onugar hills east of present-day south Pasadena Boulevard and west of Arroyo Seco Creek. Park Avenue runs through the heart of South Pasadena, providing access to many resources including water and lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1892, Philip Morris bought 6 acres (2 ha) of undeveloped land northwest of downtown Los Angeles for $1,000 from George Willsham Postmaster General of San Diego County. He named it Morris Park after his father-in-law, James A. Morrison (1828–93). In 1903, Barney Oldfield moved his family from Englewood Cliffs, NJ to Los Angeles when he became president and CEO of American Tobacco Company (ATC). His son Barney Oldfield Jr., then age 16 had just finished high school when he went into business with his father on his own account as an independent tobacconist in 1913 in North Hollywood called "the Star". Mr. Oldfield continued this business until his death in 1984 at age 92; it is now known as Teavana . In 1943, during World War II United States Naval Forces USS "Atom" damaged by a torpedo while en route to Ulithi Atoll off Okinawa brought about Japan's surrender with its associated damage control measure involving installation within the destroyer USS "Atom" which included detonation charge responsible for sinking Japanese battleship Yamato without warning her crew before she could surrender; this event also resulted in 20 deaths among those on board ship including 11 sailors from USS "Atom". The old Japanese plantation house that still stands across Wilson Ave., just north of USIS Rd./Pasadena Blvd., from where Emperor Hirohito signed Instrument No 9 August 2nd 1945 was used as a POW camp by United States forces during World War II as one barracks Measure Central Peachtree Headquarters Annex From 1942 until 1945 it housed 533 airmen lost during WWII! South Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was incorporated on December 4, 1909. The population was 105,826 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena is located in the southeastern corner of Los Angeles and is bordered by Arcadia to the east and north, Carson City to the west and south, Bell Gardens to the east and southeast, Pico Rivera to the northwest and west, and Boyle Heights to the southwest. The first settlers in what is now South Pasadena were Mexican nationals who arrived during Rancho Cahuenga's gold rush period in 1848. They built homes near present-day Arcadia Avenue. After annexation by Los Angeles County in 1876, many of these early settlers relocated or abandoned their homes due to fear of being expelled by Angelenos. In 1907 Dixon House (now an historic building) became one of South Pasadena's first businesses when it rented space from John Condon for $1 per month. At that time there were only a few small towns in southern California with this type of rental business. By 1916 there were 16 businesses operating out of South Pasadena - eleven rental properties and five manufacturing businesses such as saddles and harnesses, cigars (later cigarettes), clothing (including suits made from cashmere), flourishes (later dyes), soap products (which then included chamomile shampoo) and canned goods like tomatoes and beans; all operated out of Dixon House which continued as a commercial center until it burned down on October 5th, 1922. A new commercial district sprang up around 1st Street & Sixty Fourth Place between 1912-1920 known as "The Triangle". This area was home to a variety of shops including grocery stores Radio shackangles types movie theaters dance halls bars restaurants several banks Owney's department store theatrical production firms cinematograph companies Western Union service post office three churches two Masonic lodges Presbyterian church two other denominations also set up shop here some worked for own families others did business with local merchants etc... In 1924 Southern Pacific Railway came through town providing passenger transportation services with its new El Monte Station just south of town on sixty fourth place where passengers could buy tickets online or pick them up at the station kiosk before departure
South Pasadena was founded in 1881 by John A. South and his wife, Emmeline C. South. The community was named for the southernmost point of Pasadena County, which at that time included Los Angeles County. It is thought that the first settler in South Pasadena was James Sutherlin, who arrived in 1872 from Illinois. In 1887, a post office called "Pasadena" was established in what is now South Pasadena, and mail arrived there from as far away as San Francisco and Oakland. In 1912, a group of citizens purchased land east of downtown to build what became known as the "Golden Dome". The dome was designed by architects Harry Kelsey and Edward Lathrop and it functioned as a center for culture and education until it burned down in 1969. Today, part of the Golden Dome property is used as an elementary school campus. The community has experienced many changes over its history including population growth throughout the 20th century; however, it has always been home to a wide variety of people with different lifestyles and interests. Some famous residents include writer J.D Salinger (who grew up in nearby West Hills); musician Roy Orbison (whose family lived on Rancho Santa Anita Boulevard near Pacific Palisades High School); actor/writer Christopher Lloyd (whose father owned one of South Pasadena's largest businesses); golfer Arnold Palmer (born in nearby Montebello); actress Shelley Winters (brought up in nearby Silver Lake); and singer Barbra Streisand (brought up around Glendale).
