South Pasadena, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 33,717 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley and has been situated on land that had been under Spanish and Mexican control since 1785. The community was incorporated on November 3, 1898. In 1910 Harry Belmont founded Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel as a branch office of his Motion Picture Trust company in East Hollywood. He leased 10 acres (40,000 m2) near Highland Avenue and Olvera Street for $5 per year with an option to purchase it for $10 per year after five years. The hotel became known as Belmont Place after him and continues to be used today as a hotel by different entities such as NBCUniversal Entertainment Company (NBCUniversal), Universal Music Group (UMG), Time Warner Entertainment Company (TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY FILM COMPANY) and Sony Pictures Entertainment Corporation (SONY ENTERTAINMENT CO.). In 1922 Jack London set up his first store here called the Rancho Santa Fe Market which survives to this day across Spring Street from where he operated it until 1934 when he closed down due to Prohibition problems in America which led to his ire being expressed through many articles about South Pasadena written at that time by local reporters William Randolph Hearst included "A Ramble in Santa Fe" published on January 14th 1925 while Jack London still lived there: “Hollywood’s Own Jealousy" also appeared on Hearst’s front page just over two months later on February 6th 1925 with the following headline: "Jack London Fights Prohibition"). On October 8th 1923 movie producer/director Hal Roach started production of his film "Peggy". A number of people associated with Hollywood's early days including future stars like Buster Crabbe and Mary Astor Wormes contributed their skills or money towards making Roach's film possible; among these individuals were Roach himself, producer/director John Houseman, writers Edward Dmytryk and Lloyd Kaufman who penned the storyboards for all but one shot of the film including its opening scene featuring Astor Wormes.. In 1927 Sam Goldwyn bought out Roach's share in Peggy so Goldwyn could produce more independent films than ever before without having any connection with either Paramount or RKO Radio Pictures main Nayland studios where Paramount produced most wartime Allied films during World War II outside American Zone productions such as " Hellfighter" starring Redford etc... From then until discontinuation goldwyn released over 200 feature length Films domestically alone sometimes collaboratively partnering various studio heads eking out some profits along the way... Finally upon Harlan Ellison buying silver screen rights to screen writer Clifford Odets' play " Lighting Up Riverside Drive", not only did Ellison become head man at 20th Century Fox but also purchased Silver Lake Studios meaning forevermore South Pasadena would have its own movie industry located within its boundaries!
