South Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 24,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles–Fremont-San Gabriel area. South Pasadena's namesake is Jesse James and his family who settled there in 1874. The first post office called South Pasadena was established in 1876, and the first store was opened by Wm. H. Broughton in 1886. The name "South Pasadena" originated from its location on Canoga Avenue between Aliso Street and Fourth Street near present day Olive Drive. A street map of 1907 shows that two blocks south of Olive were two small towns named Willow and Stonegate which probably derived their names from WILLOW PARK (now part of Exposition Park) across Canoga Avenue from where South Pasadena now sits. In 1916, citrus fruit grower Manuel Ortega builtOrtega Farms on what is now Ortega Boulevard just south of Interstate 5 near then-Interstate 10 to produce oranges for export to Europe and North America under the brand name King Ranch grapes. In 1927, Ortega sold his holdings to a group led by local builder Pertinax Coleman for $3 million dollars The early years at Ortega Farms were difficult due to erratic weather patterns that caused freezes during winter months; however, with hard work over many years he increased production to 1 million boxes per acre by 1938 Some notable visitors during this time include President Franklin D Roosevelt who stopped at Orteaga Farms on his way from Southern California into metropolitan Los Angeles; actor/director Cecil B DeMille who visited the orchards while filming scenes for Paramount’s “King Kong” movie; Hollywood film producer Harry Cohn; banker Jay Cooke Sr.; shipbuilder John Lyle Doleman; football player Red Scare
South Pasadena is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley. The population was 24,859 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena has been inhabited by humans since the 18th century. It became a city in 1912 and was initially named "South Pasadena Heights". In 1886, Southern Pacific Railway employees laid tracks through parts of present-day South Pasadena unincorporated territory and began to name their new community after its sights and sounds: North Park (later North Park West), South Park (later South Pasadena), Vinegar Hill, Imperial (later Imperial Heights). The first post office opened in 1888 in what is now part of downtown South Pasadena. The first store opened in 1889 at 219 S Fairfax Ave., just south of State Street between Empire Boulevard and Maple Avenue. A second store built two years later at 209 W Alameda Ave., east of State Street near Carl Gustavson Way.
