South Lake Tahoe, California is a small town located inapproximateley six miles from the Nevada border. The population of South Lake Tahoe was estimated at about 12,000 in the early 1800s and it has since shrunk to only 6,000 residents today. However, the history of South Lake Tahoe goes back to 1854 when prospectors discovered gold near present day South Lake Tahoe. The miners who discovered gold developed a village around what is now called GoldMine Hill which served as their base of operations for prospecting and mining. Over time, other settlements were built around GoldMine Hill including Mineral Wells and North Sierraville. The original town site was surveyed by George Aiken on September 10th, 1854 and it was named Silver Grove after some silver ore that had been found thereabouts. After years of development and growth in South Lake Tahoe due to the discovery of gold, Silver Grove eventually became known as Oldtown because it was home to both the first post office in Nevada (1855) as well as one of the largest stores in old Nevada before it moved to Carson City. Gold rush days came and went but until 1861 when an act by Congress made mining within 2 1/2 miles of any city or town legal, nothing much happened with regards to silvermining hereabouts although a few men did strike out forays into what’s now northern California during this time frame. Finally in 1865 when Act 186 granted statehood to California; South Lahomey got its own congressman from Northern California’s Central Valley district – John Pemberton – who then promptly lobbied Congress for a bill authorizing southward settlement along Mormon Trail extending ranchlands rich with silver deposits lying between Echo Canyon Diablo Pass & Fillmore Hills (the future site of Reno). As soon as this news reached Sacramento they sent Deputy Govt Agent Willard Richards up north with instructions “to open up these mines rapidly & make every man rich& establish new towns on them which he should so designate” This marked just one step forward for establishment of American outpost at SLC though far from complete due mainly because no choice could be made about where atop Mt Whitney situated which would have become easily accessible via wagon road once more making exploration all but moot had not snowed over again 3 years later! That same year another act by Congress resulted in control over Indian Territory being relinquished thereby opening up SLC prospects yet again! It wasn’t until 1876 when James Wickersham became United States Minister Plenipotentiary For Western Interior Affairs setting off an era where mineral discoveries continued abound throughout most if not all western US Territories thus sparking anew interest among easterners intent upon exploiting these vast new resources some 25 years after ample notice had been given! And so begins quite possibly America’s single biggest boomtown period ever spawned solely due favorably fortune while simultaneously shrouding numerous unsavory characters involved herein along with assorted nefarious activities going unspoken!!! In short: From Gold Mine Hill through Oldtown plaza down Fillmore Street across Depot Street into First National Bank building thence onto Main Street & finally into what we presently know as “South Lake Tahoe” our story begins…………………..
The area now known as South Lake Tahoe was first inhabited by the Paiute people. In 1849, gold was found in the region and settlement began. The town of South Pass formed around this time, and by 1860, it had become a key stop on the California Trail. By 1865, South Pass had been renamed Quartzsite after the discovery of quartzite Mines there. In 1868, quartzite mining ended and many local miners relocated to Nevada to work in the Gold Rush. Over time, the nameSouth Lake Tahoe was given to various parts of California that lay east of US Highway 27: Donner Summit (now a ghost town), Clear Creek (now part of Reno), Mormon Hill (now Sutterville), and Washoe Valley (now White Sands).
