The history of shooting target holders can be traced back to the early 1870s when a Mr. Fenton erected a small stand at the edge of his property in South Lake Tahoe, California. The stand was known as the Fenton Tractor Stand and was used for target shooting. In 1877, two brothers named Frank and Jesse Fenton purchased the business from their father and continued to run it until it closed its doors in 1924. In 1925, Mr. Wernick built a Shooting Gallery on his property adjacent to the Fenton tractor stand which became one of South Lake Tahoe's most popular tourist attractions. The Wernick Shooting Gallery offered visitors an opportunity to experience shooting at targets from various distances using shotguns and rifles. In 1951, Mr. Wernick passed away and his son Harry took over operations of the gallery until 1966 when he sold it to Dr. John Slingerland who operated it until 1984 when it became unprofitable and closed down again. After years of effort by these men and others involved with developing Yosemite Valley, including numerous investors such as Irvine Welsh and Jepson Weed, Yosemite became fully public land in 1906. South Lake Tahoe emerged during World War II as a major military staging ground for shipments of materiel to Northern China via the Golden State Route (now Interstate 80). During various periods over many years South Lake Tahoe functioned both as a community center and naval airbase; its ZIP code is 84534 which served both roles until 1959 when it became part of Reno’s city limits. Today much of what once constituted South Lake Tahoe are within boundaries defined by Air Force Base Ewa Beach east of town along I-80/UACOA Boulevard; while portions still lying within municipal boundaries are served by Lockewood Elementary School on Airport Road just north of I-80 exit 310B (southbound), North Coast High School across Airport Road from AFBE HQ southeast corner onto North Coast Highway #2 between Lockewood Elementary School & airport road; while Middle Eastern American Airlines' international terminal building remains standing(replacing an earlier hangar) adjacent to Lockewood Elementary School just east side Int'l Terminal Rd./State Hwy 395W inside airport boundary where Int'l Terminal Rd./State Hwy 395W used to be before It closed down due to fire 5/14/11
