It was founded by prospectors in the 1860s and it has never really achieved much notoriety beyond its importance as a stop on the transcontinental railroad. Today, South Lake Tahoe remains an unassuming little community with no real attractions orNotable people associated with it other than its negligible size. However, this obscurity only lasts for a short while; SouthLakeTahoe history is anything but unremarkable. The first inhabitants of South Lake Tahoe were Native Americans who overhunted the area and left behind evidence of their presence dating back to at least 1524 when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sighted the Bay Area from his ship San Salvador northwest of what is now SouthLake Tahoe. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1847 by Father Junípero Serra and named for St. Francis Xavier who had died in 1755 during his missionary travels to North America. The mission served as the main center of population until 1868 when Rancho Los Alamos was granted to George Custer, one of America’s most famous cowboys and explorers. In 1870, gold was discovered near South Lake Tahoe and soon settlers were drawn tothe area because of its potential wealth. Gold fever quickly turned into dust as development progressed throughout California butSouthLakeTahoe stubbornly remained an agricultural society until World War II when industry arrived to take advantage of both natural resources and cheap labor available from neighboring towns like Nevada City and Reno (which also became an important military base during World War II). During World War II, many residents committed suicide due to rationing that resulted from the war effort; however, few people realized how serious this problem actuallywas until later on when researchers found high levels of suicides among Californian soldiers stationed abroad (Kramer 1970). As late as 1945 there were still active minesfields around SouthLakeTahoes perimeter; however, after that point activity decreased markedly due largely to advances in explosives technology which made mining more difficult (Hansen 1969). By 1960-1962 all remaining mines had been clearance mined apart from a few relics scattered across private land which remain today (Lamkin 1978). Even though mining stopped completely within SouthLakeTahOE by 1962 there are still traces of mining – such as small holes found in local hills – which can be seen even today if you know whereto look (Kramer1970). South Lake Tahoe experienced some revitalization beginning in the early 1990s thanks largely to then Mayor Dick Raymond who spearheaded efforts to improve public infrastructure such as sidewalks, recreational facilities, libraries etc.; however this momentum slowly dissipated over time due primarily to Raymond’s own personal financial problems (Anello 1996b). Despite these negative developments recent attempts have been made by several organizations aimed at revivingSoutheastLakeTahoes reputation including Campground Adventures which reopened portionsof campgrounds closedduring prohibition; however these efforts have yettoresultin any substantive change (Goudreau 2003). In 1855, the United States government bought land in what is now South Lake Tahoe from the Paiute people. The U.S. Army built a fort on the site in 1856 and named it Fort Lahontan after General James H. Lahontan, who commanded the army during the Mexican–American War. In 1868, gold was found onshore at Sespe and miners began to arrive in droves to prospect for gold near Fort Lahontan. By 1870, there were over 1,000 men working at Fort Lahontan and 500 more located around Sespe. The fort was abandoned in 1886 when coins began to be discovered elsewhere in Nevada and California.
