South Lake Tahoe, California is a small city in the Sierra Nevada of Northern California. It is located on the east side of Lake Tahoe and is bordered by Yosemite National Park to the north, Nevada County to the west, and Stanislaus County to the south. The population was 522 at the 2010 census. South Lake Tahoe has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years and it is one of America's most popular tourist destinations. The first European explorers to visit South Lake Tahoe were Francisco Lopez de Cordova and Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. They explored what is now Yosemite National Park and found it to be a beautiful but inhospitable place. In 1839, John Cranch discovered gold in South Lake Tahoe while exploring for prospectors in what is now Carson City, Nevada. This led to rapid growth in South Lake Tahoe as people came from all over to find this new wealth. The town was named after General Jack Ahern who had organized a group of American soldiers who fought against Mexican forces during the Spanish–American War (1898). In 1951, SouthLakeTahOE passed through an act known as Measure 07 which authorized development within its limits without village or town status being granted first. This Act created much excitement among residents as they awaited news about how their community would develop since they felt that they were being left outcasts amidst all of the towns surrounding them on both sides of Highway 395. The Town Area Plan amendment (TAAP) was passed two years later which provided for more comprehensive planning for village-like status with increased powers including control over economic development, zoning regulations, streetscape design, fire prevention, building permits and more! This Amendment also established “Town Services” which included everything from street cleaning to public safety! With these changes comes increased responsibility for Village Manager appointees who have broad authority over all aspects of village life including elections and budgeting! As time went on some members started questioning whether or not these extra powers were really necessary given that there seemed to be no real increase in activity or prosperity within their boundaries! However, with recent growth trends throughout North America many believe that these same powers may simply be put into place as a precautionary measure should things go sour again within their boundaries

The region became known as "The Gold Rush" because of the numerous gold discoveries that were made in and around South Lake Tahoe during this time. In addition to the gold finds, South Lake Tahoe also became known for its many skiing resorts and other recreational activities. By 1960, however,South Lake Tahoe had lost much of its popularity due to various factors such as the opening of nearby Yosemite National Park and increased traffic on the local roads.
