In 1886, a group of men from Southern California met to discuss the possibility of building a lighted road sign in South Gate. The men decided to name their new town after General George Custer, who had been killed in action at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The first official lights were added to the town square on November 12, 1886 by J.H. Goodrich and Son. The first American-made weapon flashlight was designed and built by Harry Morse in 1903 for use with his Morse Rifle Company's model Rifles. Because rifles were not yet available with illumination capabilities, Morse designed and built an all-in-one flashlight that could be used as both a light and aiming light for rifle shootouts during World War 1. By 1910, it had become one of the most important cities in southern California due to its location and importance as an agricultural center for produce such as grapes and citrus trees that traveled far away into other parts of America. The city's fortunes changed dramatically during World War II when much needed munitions production took place here including ammunition factories which produced shells that helped victory over Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war ended there was a growth boom thanks largely to new housing developments like Northgate Plaza which replaced many older dwellings around town while also creating jobs in plumbing and heavy engineering endeavors which continue today through companies such as Cablevision (now Time Warner), Lockheed Martin Missile Systems Division (LMTD) and Hughes Aircraft Company (HUGHES). Today South Gate remains an active local community with events taking place year-round including a variety of annual festivals including the Christmas Festival Parade which takes place every December; Pageant Days; Jazz Festivals; Latino Heritagefest; Chinese New Year's Day parade; Kipling Park Open Air Show & Boat Ride on Lake Ontario; Fourth Of July fireworks displays etc.; various cultural events like art shows/ exhibits/ music concerts/ theatrical productions etc., all culminating in a major football game or festival event each fall called "Fiesta".SouthGate continues its traditions such as participating fullyheartedly each year in both City Council Elections - held November 3rd through 7th - where citizens have direct control over how their municipality functions via directly elected officials who are responsible for issues pertaining thereto such as budgets, police services etc., plus referenda or initiatives concerning matters within our city’s jurisdiction – typically measures that may impact residents’ quality of life but are nonetheless widely sought by those within our community – this past year saw passage by voters on councilmember terms proposed amendments affecting public works funding levels for 2016-2020 inclusive thereof: Measure A becoming effective immediately upon approval by City Council pursuant to Chapter 624A Statutes Of 2019;Measure B receiving first reading prior approval by City Council upon ratification pursuant to Article IV section 2(b) OF THE CITY CODE OF LAWRENCE COUNTY AND FURTHER IMPLEMENTATION PURSUANT TO Section 5(e) thereof And finally Measure C receiving second reading prior approval by City Council following ratification pursuant to Article IV section 2(b) OF THE CITY CODE OF LAWRENCE COUNTY

In 1847, the first post office in South Gate opened. The town was named for General James H.Southgate, who had led an expedition against the Yuman Indians in 1846. In 1861, South Gate became part of Mexicali County and was incorporated as a town. On February 6, 1912, South Gate was renamed after George Washington Carver Jr., one of its most famous citizens.
