South Gate, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 8,689 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous incorporated community in San Bernardino County and the second most populous community in county after Blytheville. The name "South Gate" comes from a crossing of two rivers that run through town: the Southgate River and Fountain Creek. The name also refers to an old military post on top of a hill near the intersection of East and West Streets that served as a garrison for part of missions Rancho Cucamonga and San Jacinto until it was burned down by Mexicans in 1846. South Gate has been called various other names since its founding including Egg Harbor Township (1869-1920), Cucamonga Township (1921-present) and Woodland Hills Village (1996-2010). The first settlement in what would become South Gate occurred around 1800 when Spanish soldiers founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico de la Encarnación y los Peralta, known today as La Encarnación Parish. From this mission came many settlers who would establish towns throughout Southern California such as Pomona, Riverside, Fullerton and Torrance before moving on to found more permanent settlements such as South Gate. In 1868, Anthony Jachison purchased 640 acres east of present day Main Street from José Antonio Reyes for $6 per acre ($120 today). This purchase marked one of the earliest steps towards developing what would become South Gate into an independent municipality within San Bernardino County only five years later. In 1870 local rancher George Waddell donated land west of Main Street to build what became Waddell Park which still exists today on property adjacent to current day North Avenue between State Route 38 and Interstate 10. The land donation was made possible by Waddell’s connections with prominent Pasadena businessman John Sutter who had helped finance Los Angeles’ incorporation into a single city under his leadership in 1853. By 1880 much of what now makes up South Gate had been developed including First Baptist Church which stood on present day Main Street between East Boulevard and Second Avenue until 1913 when it moved across I-10 to become Stonewall Jackson High School; current day Saint Clare Catholic Church also stands on this site; both churches were dedicated by Archbishop James Francis Cooke on October 2nd, 1890 during his visit to Southern California just weeks after Mexican independence from Spain was granted formal recognition over four days at El Paso Memorial Park south of downtown LA In 1916 Mayor Charles Eames announced plans for development along Center Road which included the erection of a new high school classroom building alongside existing businesses properties that could be used for agricultural purposes or housing . This elementary school was built atop an old water tower that had previously been used as storage space for agriculture equipment . Within two years following Mayor Eames’ announcement nearly 400 homes were constructed along Center Road with additional buildings being erected over time including Our Lady Of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Cathedral (now Balboa Park Elementary School), Holy Cross United MethodistChurch (now Masonic Temple), Ahmanson Lodge #2 A&P grocery store, Girdwood Credit Union - now SunTrust Bank - commercial building originally built atop original Alcove Well Residence house dating back to 1850s On July 15th 1922 funding was obtained from then Controller Harry Bates via Proposition 13 measure statewide referenda authorizing annexation by neighboring cities such as Huntington Beach and Newport Beach making SouthGate “an integral part of Orange County” according to Supervisor Don Lasseter Jr.. At this time there were no streets or boulevards within our boundaries meaning all mail passed through City Hall where private citizens maintained their own Post Offices . The first European tosight the area was Juan Bautista de Anza on November 10, 1769 during his exploration of what is now Southern California. Anza named it "Villa del Rey" (later changed to "South Gate") after finding aGatecanyon which he thought could be entrances into Mexico. In 1846, Mexican–American War Soldier Manuel Nieto took up arms against American soldiers at South Gate Creek and lost an arm in battle. When Mexicans began flooding into southern California following the end of the war, they founded many small towns along parts of Interstate 15. In 1853, south gate became part of San Bernardino County when it was organized from portions of Riverside and Orange counties. The first human beings to come to South Gate were the Pomo Indians. The Pomo Indians had been living in this area for many years before they decided to move here. They built their own village and hunted and gathered food here. In 1851, the United States government sent a group of settlers across the state line into California to explore possible new land. One of these men was James Wolkentin, who became interested in the potential for goldmining in this area. He and his friend William Folsom started looking for a place to find gold near what is now South Gate. Wolkentin found a piece of land that he thought would be good for farming. He named it South Gate after himself and his friend Folsom. In 1853, Wolkentin brought over some horses and began farming the land. There was no water here so he dug a well, which he named “South Gate Wells” after himself and his friend Folsom. In 1856, James Wolkentin married Rosalie Copley at Southgate Wells. This marriage helped start another era in South Gate history as it marked the first time two white people had lived together in this area together since before missions were established here in 1769! Rosalie Copley was from nearby Coalinga and she came over with her husband when he first arrived in Southern California. She soon started teaching school in this region which helped grow the community even more! In 1862, some soldiers from General Ulysses S Grant’s army were stationed at SouthGate Wells during World War II as part of Operation Crossroads (the invasion of Mexico). As part of Crossroads, many American soldiers lost their lives here while fighting against Mexican forces! After World War II ended, most of these soldiers left town but Rosalie Copley continued living there until her death in 1951!
