On May 2, 1907, during World War II American forces burned down part of Spanish Fort which served as Japanese military headquarters during World War II. The fire destroyed all but two buildings on the original Mission San Gabriel Arcángel campus including what is now known as "The Chinese Chapel" (which housed a missionary chapel), "The School House" (renowned for its educational opportunities for Mexican Americans), "The Barracks" (renowned as one of Southern California's best examples of rustling live oak trees) and "The Old Barracks." In 1951 Mayor Harry Siewert proclaimed that Saturday morning would be History Day in South Gate; from then until 1990 every Saturday morning there was an event staged at City Park headlined by local dignitaries or representatives from various agencies responsible for community services such as garbage removal or fire suppression. These events included presentations from local historians about local history topics such as floods or earthquakes that had occurred in their area during those years; open houses where citizens could tour relevant historical resources; and lunches featuring specially prepared dishes made especially foruseum visitors who were interested in learning more about early Californian history while enjoying some refreshment along the way. The new nation erected a series of forts along the southern border to protect its citizens and land from Mexican raiders. The first fort was built at South Gate in 1852 and it served as a military post until 1862. The second fort was built at South Gate in 1865 and it served as a communications center between the US military and local Indian tribes. During World War II, South Gate became an important airfield because of its location on civilian airspace over Los Angeles. The USAAF used it for training during World War II, then developed it into an operational base.
