South Gate is a small city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. It is the principal town of Southgate Village and Southgate Township. On October 25, 1951 United States Air Force Base Northrop Grumman (later Los Angeles International Airport) was dedication day for Anderson-Henderson Field Air National Guard Station No 4 (now Edwards Air Force Base). This newly activated base would house fighter aircraft from several nations during World War II; one of these nations being Japan who flew their Type 031 Zero fighters from this station against American planes over Southern California during 1944-1945Operation Against Japan

The original South Gate was built in 1849 as part of the San Gabriel Valley Campaign against Mexican insurgents. It was a small, simple structure, and its only function was to serve as a checkpoint for travelers on the Via de la Luz. The first courthouse in South Gate was built in 1861. In 1868, construction began on what is now the plaza at the southeast corner of First Street and Euclid Avenue, which served as the town square until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. The old courthouse still stands today, serving as a museum.
