The area now known as South Gate was part of the Inland Empire before it became a part of Pasadena. The first European to visit what is now South Gate was Spanish explorer and missionary Francisco López de Legazpi in 1769. He named the area San Miguel del Rio Grande, or "San Miguel River Valley". In 1847, Mexican land grants were given to several families in what is now Pasadena by Governor José Joaquín Murillo. One family, the Alarcón Family, granted 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Broadway on then-Walden Road. This parcel became known as Eastwood Hills. In 1853, businessman Jameson Clark bought 640 acres (240 hectares) from the Alarcón Family for $10 million. He subdivided this property into three parcels - Northgate Park, Eastwood Hills and Westgate Park - and named them Rancho Los Nietos y las Aguas Calientes (Rancho = "Newlands", Los = "the", Aguas = "water"), meaning " settings in water" or "watery settings". Clark built his home at Rancho Los Nietos y las Aguas Calientes on what is now Highland Avenue. He also developed roads and had a small ranch yard dedicated to horse breeding and raising hay for export to Europe. Eventually, other ranchers followed Clark's lead and established small ranches around South Gate including those of Hiram Johnson and George Custer. During World War II, many residents of Pasadena helped contribute their skills to the war effort including making munitions plants in Riverside County or working at defense contractor Wernher von Braun's plant in Sylmar along with other Southern California businesses such as Ford Motor Company plants at Hawthorne Village near Orangetown and El Segundo near Hermosa Beach
