South Gate, California is a town located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Jose–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in South Gate were Spanish missionaries who founded missions near what is now south gate park on December 17, 1827. The mission was abandoned on December 26 of that year because of Indian attacks and epidemics brought about by the Gold Rush. Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Santa Clara) was founded nearby in 1836 by Franciscan missionary Father José de la Guerra y Crespo and began serving the people of present-day Fremont County as well as parts of Sonoma and Napa Counties before its closure in 1847. In 1851,Congress passed an act ordering all military posts within Mexican territory be closed down except for Fort Point on Puget Sound which would remain open until 1861 when it was again closed due to warring factions inside Mexico. After the end of hostilities with Mexico, Southern Californians lobbied for Congress to re-open Fort Point so their agriculture could continue unimpeded and growth continued unchecked throughout much of America’s Civil War years. When Fort Point reopened in 1865 it became one of the largest military installations east of Mexico City outside Boston Harbor where troops stationed during conflict used for target practice at night and engaged Native Americans living near the fortifications including some known as “The Forty Thieves” from this capture or robbery incident which took place on March 4th 1865 while supplies were being unloaded off shore at Sandusky beach just north of South Gate Park
