Situated on the banks of the Sacramento River, the community was founded in 1876 by Anglo-American settlers as an agricultural village. The name comes from Southgate Springs, a watering hole near present-day South Gate Elementary School. By 1907, however, South Gate had become a bedroom and industrial center for eastern Contra Costa County. In 1916, South Gate was incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Northern California’s most comprehensive communities with over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents. The histories of both South Gate and its surrounding area are intertwined with that of Sacramento County which lays claim to much of what is now southern Nevada and southeastern Arizona. In 1847, Mexican gold miners discovered large quantities of gold at Sutter’s Mill inpresent-day south Sacramento County (now within east Contra Costa County). This new discovery led to rapid population growth in the rural areas around Fort Point on the riverbank where prospectors became known as “the Forty Thieves” because they often stole ore from other men working at Sutter’s Mill. The influx of miners increased demand for land around Fort Point so early settlers began purchasing it from Native Americans through treaty negotiations or by force if necessary. In 1856, three brothers - George Washington Parkhurst (1825-1912), James Hines (1828-1900) and John Day (1831-1915) - organized a group of young men to purchase two thousand acres in what is now south Sacramento County from Bernardino Crafton & Co., builders of the first wagon road between Stockton andSacramento City. They named their new settlement "Southgate" after their native home in Virginia where they had been born just four years earlier. Soon afterward they started building homes – some simple log cabins called "House Rock" – on well worn dirt roads that led to nearby springs for water supply and grazing for their animal herds. These pioneers were followed by others who arrived during various waves over the next few decades: Ft Worth Roadrunners arriving in 1860; Gentryvilleians coming in 1865; Kearny Street Natives coming about 1870; Scotsman immigrants arriving about 1880; Chinese immigrants coming about 1890; Japanese Americans arrivesto Californiasto 1943 when they were mustered out as World War II troops . All these arrivals left behind lasting physical traces: many old farmingsteads still stand today including those associated with House Rock Roadrunners such as Osmond Cottage located just northeast of downtown South gate along Interstate 5 exit 13B; Acton Roadrunner Settlement east off I-5 exit #2A also contains several dwellings dating back to this period including Acton Rdrunner Cabin #4E built circa 1840 AD.; Atherton Rdrunner Cabin #2A also survives essentially unchanged from its original construction date circa 1850 AD.; Pioneer Drinker's Farmstead west off I-5 exit #3C also features an intact pioneer dwelling dating back to this period., while Northgate Landing beachfront park located adjacent to local high school offers visitors views fringing Elk Grove Hills onto Albany Bayou undeveloped until recently
