South Gate, California is a city in Orange County, California. It was founded in 1887 and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Orange County. The population of South Gate was 33,777 at the 2010 census. In February 1861, General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry were during their March to the Sea campaign when they reached South Gate after crossing the Sierras. The first citrus orchards were established near South Gate by Wm. Halsey and others in 1878. A small brick two-story building known as "The Grove" stood on what is now First Street from 1886 to 1912 when it was bought by Samuel Morse for $5,000 cash. The grove continued to be used as a nursery until 1937 when it became part of Jurupa Valley School District #1A which included nearby Irvine and Mission Viejo along with most of Seal Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel In 1888, Harry Chandler decided to found his own town in central Orange County which he named Southgate after himself and some friends who had come overland from New Mexico that year on a cattle drive called the Trail of Tears. Chandler's townsite lay east of present day Fourth Street between Center Avenue (now I-5) and Park Boulevard (now Broadwalk). When Southgate was platted in 1889 by Fenton Thompson, its boundaries were primarily First Street northward to Jurupa Valley School District #1B westward; Second Street southward to Third Street; Broadway eastward terminus northwest of Center Avenue 2 years later another locality named Westvale was laid out adjacent to present day Northwood Drive In 1911 John Sutter opened up what is now Sutter's Mill on Geary Boulevard just south of present day Academy Road near where Eastvale now stands Thereafter several other businesses developed around this mill including Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company Local 890 which built USS Hornet through 1942 circa 1915-1916; Southern Pacific Railroad Wharf Branch Office - closed 1955; Jardin Nursery - operated from 1913 until 1945 before becoming an apartment complex called Vista Gardens located off SW 2nd St across from Chase Plaza mall
Governor Edmunds ordered the evacuation of South Gate on Nov. 12, 1868 after a group of Mexicans attempted to cross the US-Mexico border. The order was followed by a weeks long standoff with Mexican forces at the entrance to South Gate. On Dec. 10, 1868, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at South Gate without further resistance from the US troops.
