South Gate is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,866 at the 2010 census. It is located in Orange County. The name comes from Spanish for "gate" and "town". South Gate was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. In 1860, it became part of the newly formed Orange County. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1872, a school was built and named after Dr. George Wager Shriver, who had helped found Stanford University. From 1888 to 1912, South Gate served as the county seat for Orange County. On December 12, 1912, it was renamed South Gate again to honor Ulysses S Grant's visit to that area two years earlier during his presidency (1889-92). In 1955, South Gate became an officially incorporated city and has since grown rapidly with its own police department and fire department as well as various business districts within its borders which have all contributed to its growth over time including: Northgate Mall - one of Southern California's largest shopping centers - being developed on land once belonging to then-Mayor Harry Moody; Vista Drive - which runs along Interstate 5 near downtown south gate; new housing developments such as Villa Park Estates and Mirage Lakes being built on or around State Route 508 just north of town; golf courses such as Mission Hills Golf Club (just northwest of town) becoming popular tourist destinations due to their long drives into town from nearby rural areas; and even more recent development coming down the street from downtown south gate at what used to be known locally as "The Gap" - now home to several restaurants including TopoChico Mexican Grill & Cantina regarding their success given that they are fully enclosed off-street parking spaces complete with security cameras etc., making it one stop you won't want to lose if visiting this charming little corner of central valley country!
