In the early 1900s, South Gate was an agricultural town on the edge of San Bernardino County. The population was only about 1,000 people and most of them lived in small communities near Highway 17. One of the few businesses in town was a store called the Optical Shop. South Gate, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population of the city was 80,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in South Gate was José de la Cruz y Costilla in 1821. A post office called South gate was established in 1825, and remained open until 1892. In 1881, Lorenzo Wright built a small adobe rancho on what is now Paseo de los Olivos Drive. He named it after his friend and mentor General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had died two years earlier. In 1882, Isaac Asimov bought Wright's land and erected a small wooden cabin known as "Asimov's House". This became the nucleus of what would become South Gate when he donated it to the townspeople in 1895 for use as their municipal meeting place and school gymnasium. A second store opened on Broadway Avenue in 1912 by Wm Hoeffer & Bros., which became one of the largest retailers in town until its closure circa 1970s due to tie-ups with other businesses downtown (Hoeffer also ran an opera house). In 1931 Harry Houdini stopped by from Europe while on vacation and spent some time at Asimov's house before continuing his tour through southern Mexico City en route back home via Los Angeles; however he never visited South Gate again because there were no hotels near Los Angeles at that time. Municipal services were first provided by Mrs Señorita Guerra from her home on First Street during 1935-1936 when all elected officials were women; she continued to provide these services until 1959 when they were transferred to City Hall where they are still provided today based upon motions filed by Mayor Kenneally or acting Mayor González as needed (the City Manager provides administrative support for this service). When World War II began most residents went into war production or served in military units but many families stayed behind to take care of their homes and gardens while their husbands went off to serve; most notably Mrs Alice Neyman who kept her home connected with underground cables running throughout her property ever since so that during wartime shortages of food not only could she provide fresh fruits and vegetables but water too.. After the war ended many people returned to their pre-war lifestyles although some did leave for new opportunities out west due to drought conditions which prevailed following Fresno’s takeover of San Diego County during 1944-1945 despite efforts by then Mayor Manuel Gomez among others etc.; however about 60% of current south gate citizens returned within 5 years thereafter according courtesy surveys conducted between 1951-1957Southgate experienced its heyday around 1957/58 when development increased rapidly including extensive construction of high schools, offices buildings etc.; however crime rates have steadily risen over recent decades making it difficult for younger generations etc.–Today much like many other American cities experiencing rapid growthremarkably few jobs have been created sufficient housing has not yet become available making it increasingly difficult for workers regardlessof education level even though job growth has occurred elsewhere such as University Town Center nearby which offers more job resourcesplus environmental problems continue such as algae blooms along river mouth causedby runoff from nearby factoriesetc.–Nonetheless community spirit remains strong despite advances made elsewhere etc.–Southgate Chamber Of Commerce website

In 1846, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at South Gate after a three-day siege. The town was burned down by the Mexicans in order to gain access to artillery ammunition that they could use against American forces besieging Mexico City. In 1905, Southgate was incorporated as a city and quickly became one of the most populous areas on the Central Coast. It experienced rapid growth during World War II, when it became home to various military installations and factories such as Alcatraz Island Naval Air Station and Point Conception Army Ammunition Plant. However, following World War II,Southgate's economy slowly began to decline as manufacturing moved out of California into other states.
