South Gate is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 33,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is home to several large universities and other large businesses. South Gate has been called "The Gateway to the Mojave" because it is close to Interstate 5 and the desert. The first people in what is now South Gate were Mono Indians who lived on Montezuma Creek between 1847 and 1852. In 1864, Joshua Hance built a small adobe cabin on his Rancho San Gabriel near present-day South Gate after meeting an American Indian named George Smith from Illinois while grazing his horse in the area. In 1870, homesteaders John Waddell and James Irvine erected a square T-shaped post office building on their rancho south of town (now east of I-5). By 1902, when demand for water led to new construction within town limits, voters approved Measure A ($10) that created Town Hall Square with a U-shape plan featuring two streets running north/south flanked by fourtwitter buildings housing City Hall and an Public Library; this original square had only three buildings – the Post Office, Store & School House; today's Administration Building stands west of Main Street behind both Streets Market Place Hotel across from old Gault Mill Race Course). The first new school in town was opened in 1907 as Rockhurst Female Seminary; however enrollment soon dropped due to prohibition issues until 1929 when community members passed Resolution No. 15 seeking approval for organized play tests for young students in grades 1 through 12 (later renamed Shadow Mountain schools). In 1925, when Route 66 bypassed Southern California through nearby Fullerton during its northern terminus at State Highway 99 en route to Mexico City, residents lobbied unsuccessfully for state highway designation as "Route 66 East". In 1931 they succeeded with passage of Assembly Bill 364 which designated SR 66 as "the Boulevard of Roses". Many popular tourist attractions such as Disneyland were founded or developed along SR 66 over ensuing decades including Mission Trails Regional Park (1957), Redondo Beach Pier (1963), Westminster Lake Recreation District (1968), North Hollywood Reservoirs (1976), Compton Hills Open Space Preserve (1988), Agoura Hills Park District(1991) and finally North Hollywood Recreational Center(2003). South Gate became an incorporated city on November 3rd 1959 with incorporation by vote of city councilmembers John Sperry and Tom Doherty Sr.; it adopted its present name fromGateway National Recreation Area located adjacent east of town off I-5 just outside neighboring Glendale Heights upon its purchase by NRAS from Pasadena Parks Department January 30th 2002 following years efforts by then Mayor Norm Coleman

South Gate is located in San Bernardino County, California, in the eastern edge of the city of San Bernardino. It was founded in 1853 as a small town on the east side of what is now Interstate 15. The name probably comes from Spanish meaning gate or entrance. The population of South Gate was only 1,000 people when it was platted by George Rogers Clark and others in 1853. Its early growth was due to its location at the junction of two major trails that crossed through central San Bernardino County: the Santa Ana Trail and the Mormon Trail. In 1856, South Gate became one of several towns along both trails that were burned by Mexican forces during their war for Independence from Spain. After Mexican independence, Englishman James Hutton purchased land near South Gate to build a ranch called Hutton Rancho Grande which he named after himself and his wife Lady Jane Grey Hutton (died 1840). By 1870, however, Hutton's ranch had been sold off and most of what is now South Gate had been developed as a small town. In 1906, local farmers began raising crops using irrigation water from nearby Alamogordo Reservoir which they diverted into rural areas around them for use by other residents and businesses. As a result, more people started coming to Southgate to live than to work on their farms; this led to its nickname "The Garden City". Southgate experiencedrowth until World War II when it lost much of its population due to military service and economic development elsewhere in Southern California. After the war ended, many returning veterans moved back into Southgate while others built new homes elsewhere in San Bernardino County. In recent decades however, some changes have occurred at Southgate with increasing numbers of people moving out or leaving because of suburban sprawl outside their reach or because they have chosen various other destinations withinSan Bernardino County such as Claremont or Diamond Bar instead
South Gate was founded on January 17, 1849 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife Lina. The first post office at South Gate was established on December 5, 1848. The town of South Gate was incorporated on February 2, 1850. On July 1, 1861, the town of South Gate merged with the city of San Bernardino to form a single municipality.
