South Gate is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. It was established in 1853 as a sub-district of San Francisco. The name comes from the Spanish words for "gate" and "fortress." South Gate is located on the southern edge of Contra Costa County, about 10 miles east of Petaluma and 20 miles west of Antioch. The first people to live in what is now South Gate were Native Americans who hunted animals in the area. The first European to visit the area was Captain John Downes, who explored thebay region during 1769-1770. Downes named both Peninsula Creek and Point Reyes after his discoveries. In 1853, landowner James Shields sold 1,000 acres (500 ha) of undeveloped land including present-day South Gate to local settlers Cesar Chavez and Emiliano Zapata for $5 per acre. Chavez had been born in Mexico City and fought against Spanish occupation during Mexican independence while Zapata had served as an officer with the Mexican army during World War I. As early as 1856, it was known that there would be a post office at South Gate because cattlemen used it as their base of operations when driving their herds overland from Central Valley settlements such as Butte and Martinez to market in San Francisco Bay Area towns like Richmond, Fremont, Walnut Creek and Newark etc., using this route known then as Diablo Pass Road. In 1861–1862 two stage coachloads of passengers traveled between South gate station on Diablo Pass Road (now Highway 101) northbound from Petaluma southward through Tomales Strait to Redding before continuing south alongpresent-day Ullico Avenue to Saginaw where they took ships back upriver for shipment into Marin County via Sausalito or Point Reyes Station before arriving at Genoa plaza on April 12th 1865 aboard USS Constitution under Governor Brown's orders following General Scott's victory at Palo Alto Bridge over Californio forces commanded by LtGen José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla y Gomez at El Pardo Encampado on March 25th 1846).
