Santa Anita racetrack opened there in 1928 and soon became an important center for horse racing in southern California. The track continued to be run until it closed in 1984 due to budget cuts by county officials during the early days of local government reform. When Southern Pacific Railroad abandoned its line through South Gate on October 24, 1984, heavy machinery belonging to the railroad had been parked near Clovelly Adobe since September 22nd as part of preparation for demolition of the old tracks onraracing circuit which then would have been accessible only by car or helicopter from Islip Beach (northwest of Long Beach). A large crowd had gathered around noon on October 24th when company workers announced that all operations along their line were suspending because of lack of money as well as an anticipated increase in competition from new Interstate 5 freeway construction; however they later declared open campground facilities adjacent thereto still available for visitors despite having no business connection withRailroad operations anymore!
