By 1848, much of what is now South Gate had been organized as a small town under the name “Southgate”. By 1860, when American Civil War veterans arrived here seeking shelter during battles near Los Angeles, they called this particular settlement “Southgate Station” because there wasn’t yet a post office hereabouts. In 1865, when Californio troops marched into Mexico to overthrow President Pancho Villa andbegin an insurgency against Mexican rule across Central America known as La Guerra de California (the California War), some South Gate residents enlisted in the effort and were quickly mustered out before returning home. However, many remains from that period still exist today within what is now South Gates limits including street names like Peralta Street and Marquez Avenue honoring those alumni who served our country during this time period. In 1901, following passage of Proposition 8 by voters statewide – a measure defining marriage as between one man and one woman – south gate became unincorporated land subject to local control through an election held at that same year for a board of trustees which included two representatives from each county within district 1 (south gate). This arrangement continued until 1971 when all county districts were combined into one larger region pursuant to state legislation establishing unified government patterns throughoutSouthern California dating back to 1861! South Gate is located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California and is part of the City of South Gate. The population was 3,821 as of 2010. The name comes from Spanish for "gate" or "bridge". The first inhabitants in what would become South Gate were the Tongva people who lived along the present day Santa Monica Boulevard in what is now known as ZIP Code 90065. They were displaced by a group of Native Americans who moved into this area during the 1847 Mexican-American War. In 1853, American miner and investor George Hearst founded a small town on his land called Hearstville to house workers he had brought over from Miningdale, New York. John Sutter arrived soon after and built him a small ranch next to where Hearstville now stands. South Gate was an agricultural center on the San Gabriel River in Southern California. It was first developed in 1846 by Antonio Lopez, a Mexican immigrant who founded the town of South Gate on land he had purchased from the East Bay Company. The community grew rapidly and soon became a major commercial and cultural center in southern California. In 1892, South Gate was renamed after General John Pershing when he visited the area while touring south central California as part of his military campaign against Mexico.
