South Gate, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 33,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Gate is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (30 km) west of Riverside. The town began as a small ranching community in 1869 on land given to Mrs. John Sutter by Governor Pio Pico during the Gold Rush. The name "South Gate" was chosen because it was thought that if one gate led into Apache Pass then all other gates would lead to Rancho San Pedro Viejo which lay just south of South Gate and extended into Riverside County. In 1910, South Gate became an incorporated city with a population of 31,622 people. At that time it was adjacent to what is now known as Henry Ford Community Park and its namesake founder's home had been demolished years earlier but parts were preserved as part of that park's development into today's Ford neighborhood. After World War II, auto manufacturing activity increased in Southern California so much so that Southgate gained designation as an industrial area; however this ended with the loss of many large plants throughout southern California during the late 1960s-early 1970s due to industry consolidation throughout North America including those in neighboring cities such as Anaheim Hills and Fullerton combined with technological advancements from companies such as Xerox Palo Alto Research Laboratories which moved their production facilities from Illinois to Santa Clara County near Fremont before moving again to Redwood City where they established Hewlett Packard Research Laboratories before eventually selling off their Palo Alto campus to Intel Corporation for $8 billion in 1997). In recent decades heavy residential growth has occurred within walking distance or bike riding distance of most major freeways leading southward towards Orange County while commercial development has relocated away from SOUTH GATE via the nearby Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum onto Interstate 880 making it easy for motorists exiting I-880 along State Route 116 (Riverside Boulevard) and Interstate 10 (State Route 122) access SOUTH GATE without havingTo go out through I-10 or exit at Old Pasadena Road/I-15

South Gate, California is a small city located on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The population was only 6,500 in 2010 and it has since shrunk to 1,200 residents. South Gate’s history began with the Gold Rush of 1848 when prospectors discovered gold near present-day South Gate Boulevard. From this discovery, many people from South Gate traveled to California in search of wealth and adventure. One such person was John Wesley Powell who explored the Rocky Mountains in 1869 and 1870. This experience led him to coin the term “Powell Hill” after his findings in that area. The first post office for South Gate was established on July 26, 1891. It operated under the name of Eastwood until 1912 when it changed its name to Southgate due to local opposition to using a word that had been associated with east coast cities like New York City and Boston. The original town hall was located at 5th Street and Mission Road but it was destroyed by fire in 1916. A new town hall was built at 25th Street and Highway 101 which served as its eponymous center until 1960 when it moved out of state because of Proposition 13 (the Tax Reform Act). In 1990, Mayor Arturo Fuentes announced that he would be leaving office after serving two terms totaling 22 years; however, he decided not to pursue reelection due to poor health condition that had caused him problems for some time before his death at age 83 years old on November 8th that year. In his honor, a park called Fuentes Park open along south gate Boulevard between First Avenue and Interstate 5 is named for Mayor Arturo Fuentes Jr.. In 1998, construction began on a large shopping mall called Fashion Valley which will include an AMC theater and other retail stores adjacent to Interstate 5. The mall opened on October 15th, 2000 adjacent to CenturyLink Field which currently houses LA Galaxy soccer team
The south gate of the California gold Rush era was built on the site of what is now South Gate, CA. TheGate was first opened on September 8, 1848 by a group of soldiers led by Colonel John C. Fremont as a way to protect miners from being robbed and carried off into slavery in the nearby mines. It became one of the important points in the early history of California.
