When World War II started on September 2nd 1939 South Gate was one of the few American communities not directly impacted by the war front or bombed during the conflict with over 100 homes destroyed or damaged by bombs dropped on Los Angeles area between June 1941-August 1945 including most famously Overland Avenue bombing which killed 83 people including 10 children playing near their home on July 24th 1945; an event that still remains memorialized within local government records as one of America's largest air disasters ever resulting in civilian fatalities like no other single act

South Gate is one of the oldest communities in Contra Costa County and has been around since 1849. The first recorded mention of SouthGate comes from Juan Bautista de Anza who noted that there were two villages in Contra Costa County called "Gatitlan" and "Tolosa". He also mentioned a mission called Nuestra Señora de Guerra which he thought may have been located near what is now South Gate. In 1849, José Joaquín Mora y Salinas became the first head of missions in Alta California and decided to establish a mission at what is now Southgate. The community was named after José Joaquin Mora y Salinas' father-in-law Manuel Antonio Serrano y Peña who donated land for the missiono. On July 26, 1851 Don Miguel Leiva Gomez granted an act of incorporation to Southgate with its own government which would be headed by a presidente directo (direct rule). On November 12, 1861 Mexican soldiers burned down part of the Mission Santa Clara while on their way to attack other missions south of San Francisco Bay. This resulted in many injuries and lost property including much important church artifacts that still reside today at various institutions such as Yesteryear Museum & Heritage Park and Candlestick Park Historical Museum inside Candlestick Park grounds across from Safeway store on Market Street in downtown San Francisco
