South Gate is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 66,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what would become South Gate were two Mexican families who arrived on July 3, 1847. They named their new town Paso Robles after one of their ranchos that they had just driven out of Mexico. The original settlers did not have any children and so abandoned their townsite in 1848 when they discovered an uninhabited stretch of open desert to the south. A post office called "Paso Robles" was established in 1850, but it only served as a stopping off point for stagecoaches delivering goods between San Bernardino and Pasadena. In 1861, Elisha Hastings donated land to South Gate for a school district which would be known as Hastings–Garland School District No. 1. In 1871, another donation from Hastings led to the erection of the first brick building in what is now South Gate – the First Methodist Episcopal Church (now Holy Cross Catholic Church). In 1892, Harry Kapp donated land east of present-day Harrison Street for a public park that would eventually become known as Kapp Park; this donation helped make Southgate one of the most popular communities in San Bernardino County with its wide variety of businesses and services available within easy walking distance for all types of residents and visitors alike! During World War II many local residents worked on Project Paperclip which led to creation of many American jobs! Afterward many people moved into larger homes which made limited use or space inside these large houses so they turned into mobile homes today! Many people also own horses or dogs so there are plenty activities available outside including playing catch or going mountain biking etc!

South Gate is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California. It was formerly known as North Hollywood and has been renamed South Gate since the early 1990s. The population of South Gate was 42,451 at the 2010 census. The area now called South Gate was first populated by the Tongva people, who arrived in Southern California about 12,000 years ago. In 1781, Spain took over Mission San Gabriel and founded a mission here called Nuestra Señora de los Angels y Nuestra Trinidad. Mexican settlers arrived in 1821 and erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. They named it Poston for Captain George A. Post of the United States Army stationed here during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1853, when sections of Los Angeles were divided into townships, North Hollywood became part of town Mather because it had more inhabitants than any other township. In 1872, Alvarado submitted an application to become a cityhood; but because he did not have approval from all members of the City Council – including Mayor James Sweeny – he withdrew his application and continued to reside at his rancho east of downtown Los Angeles until his death in 1903. In 1907 Mayor John Peebles organized a referendum to secede from Los Angeles County if voters approved an ordinance entitling “Los Angeles Municipal District No. 5” to levy taxes on property within its boundaries that would be used for public purposes such as building schools or roads “not amounting to more than five cents per acre” (the same limitation applied today). Although majority vote required for secession (62% against), Peebles prevailed after bringing suit under state law enjoining secession without voter approval (an event still remembered annually by anniversary observances held near East Broadway and Vine Street near South gate). The resulting map proposed by District Engineer Jens Jensen showed that much land within present day South Gate had already been developed as agricultural communities with homesites scattered throughout small neighborhoods off main streets: Prospect Heights/Walt Disney Drive/Mountain View Boulevard/Pasadena Avenue/Evelyn Avenue etc., while also revealing some undeveloped areas which could eventually house large housing developments like Vinegar Hill or Laurel Canyon Village…With only 1 out of every 10 blocks remaining unleased after annexation by City Services & Development Company effective January 1st 1959 (!), developers began purchasing lots southward along Main Street from Parkhurst Avenue through Vinegar Hill Road past Laurel Canyon Village before finally reaching Encino Hills Strip mall just east of Interstate 210 outside jurisdiction of Southgate police station
South Gate was founded in 1874 by Captain James W. Cooke, who named it for the Spanish town of San Gorgonio de los Padres on the border of California and Mexico. South Gate became a post office in 1875, and a telegraph station in 1886. The first store in South Gate was built in 1895. The area around South Gate was first used for ranching and agriculture before becoming an urban center with businesses and residences during the early 20th century. The city's growth continued through World War II until its incorporation as a city on January 1, 1951. Today, Southgate is home to many shops, restaurants, bars and other services which contribute to its vibrancy. It is also known for its annual summer fair which features arts and crafts from all over the world
