South Gate, California is a small city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. South Gate is located on the eastern edge of San Ramon Valley and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the south and east, San Pablo Bay to the north, and Menlo Park to the west. The name "South Gate" comes from Spanish meaning "Gate of Peace." The first permanent European settlers in what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1777. They named their new settlement El Valle de los Libres because it was free from taxation by Spain. In 1821 Mexico acquired California and made South Gate part of Alta California Province. Because there was no water available for agriculture in this area during wintertime, Missionaries established several beekeeping colonies near present-day Walnut Creek so that they could provide honey for local farmers while they awaited title to land grants from Mexican authorities. In 1849 American pioneers arrived seeking adventure and opened up ranching opportunities in this region which had been thinly populated by Native Americans since prehistory. One notable settler was James Kapp who built a cabin on his farmstead just east of today's town square in 1851. Kapp became one of Southgate's earliest residents when he moved into his farmstead following completion of the mainline railroad through Contra Costa County transporting goods between North Vallejo and Petaluma via Mill Valley (now Menlo Park). A post office called Southgate was established in 1874; its name changed to South gate City Hall on July 1, 1909 after its incorporation as a city under state law. On October 15, 1914 an earthquake struck southern California killing twenty people within two hours including five members of the City Councilman's family living inside their home at 12th Street & Avenue Mollis (now 5th Street & Avenue A) before dawn due to faulty construction work done by Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s sidings adjacent to residential areas around Southern Pacific Railroad Yards during an annual event known then as "The Great Quake." In 1936 Mayor Harry Sider brought about plans for developing much of the current downtown district with high-rise buildings along Third Street including what are now King Center Mall (northwest corner 3rd Street + northeast corner First Streets), Plaza de la Concordia (southwest corner Second Streets), Saint Laurent thoroughfare ( southeast corner First Streets), Pioneer Square Shopping Center (northeast corner 2nd Streets), State Capitol Building complex ( northwest corner First Streets) – all directly across Broadway from each other across Market Street - into what would eventually become known as "the Loop". Plans were approved but never realized due largely to opposition from powerful real estate interests associated with those same structures still standing today architecturally within walking distance or less than one mile walk away! Today much former downtown property remains commercial vacant except for some office/residential use such as Westfield Shoppingcenter located immediately south of Main Library on Castro street directly across Castro St.- easily accessible public transportation runs right outside building gates making this an excellent location for retail development without being trapped within tall buildings disadvantageousShadowLandscape

South Gate, California was founded in 1848 by the brothers Claudio and Geronimo Vallejo. The town was named after a nearby mountain range, South Gate Peak. The Vallejos were first farmers, but soon became entrepreneurs in the region. They built a adobe rancho on the banks of the San Gabriel River, which they titled Rancho Santa Anita. In 1853, they bought an adjacent piece of land and erected the first school in South Gate. By 1860, their ranch had grown to 1,600 acres and they had also purchased some tracts of land elsewhere in Southern California. In 1865, when Alta California merged with Mexico to become part of what is now called El Salvador, Rancho Santa Anita passed from the Vallejos to José Gomez de la Maza and his wife María Lourdes de la Cueva y Martinez. From 1870-1875, Gomez ran it as a livestock farm before becoming mayor of South Gate in 1875. During this time period South Gate experienced growth due to its key role as an agricultural center for southern Los Angeles County and its location at one end of what is now Interstate 5
In 1853, the first post office in South Gate opened. In 1888, a school was built and the name changed to Southgate School District No. 2. A fire destroyed the school in 1912 and it was replaced by a new one in 1914. The district was reorganized as South Gate Unified School District on November 1, 1959. On April 6, 1984, South Gate Elementary School closed due to budget cuts and its replacement is now called Parkview Elementary School.
