The name "South Gate" originated from nearby Gates Pass which afforded a view of both the Mediterranean Sea and Yosemite National Park. In 1916, Los Angeles annexed South Gate making it part of the city limits. At that time, most of what is today South Gate came from Villa Park south of Interstate 10 and east of US-101. After annexation, many businesses closed down including an ice cream parlor (now demolished) that had been in business since 1918 and a post office (which still operates). However, a few businesses such as Home Depot and Sears continued to operate until they were forced out by redevelopment projects in the early 21st century. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture with oranges being the primary crop; however, industry has also become more prominent over recent years with several businesses opening up within walking distance of each other like Whole Foods Market, Costco Wholesale Club warehouses, Subway sandwich shops etc. One downside to this growth has been noise pollution due to high concentrations of Industry near schools as well as occasional fires that have completely destroyed sections of industrial buildings in recent years
