In 1859, South Gate was founded by American pioneers. The town was named after Captain John Sutter, who founded the first permanent settlement in California. Captain Sutter, his wife and their three children immigrated to San Francisco in 1850. Over time, South Gate grew into a thriving community with a strong agricultural tradition. Today, Southgate is known for its unique architecture and for its important role in the history of California. South Gate's early years were tumultuous. In 1859, when the United States acquired Mexico's southern border, tensions between Mexicans and Americans mounted as both sides tried to control what would become one of America's most disputed regions. Sergeant Major James Gunnarson led a small force of Ulysses S. Grant's Seventh Infantry Regiment through Mexican territory on September 9th in an attempt to end the skirmishes and secure peace within the region. However, Gunnarson was met with hostility from local Mexican residents and he was quickly forced out of town by angry civilian protesters. For several years following Gunnarson's departure from South Gate, violence continued to erupt betweenMexican settlers and Anglo-American newcomers. On October 21st of that year, two men named George Houghton and William Lowrance were shot dead by white farmers while working on their farm outside of town; this began what would be known as the "1860 Massacre." The massacre left many Argentine immigrants living in South Gate interned without trial or explanation until 1862 when they were finally allowed back into the town under strict military supervision (see Argentinian Civil War). Despite these challenges, however, South Gates' citizens managed to keep their heads down and work hard during difficult times. In 1861-1862 alone, Southern Gate produced over $2 million worth of crops - more than any other outpost in San Francisco Bay Area at that time - which helped contribute to the city’s growing wealth and status quo during this period of social turmoil. South Gate, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 17,372 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and is bordered by Industry to the east and north, Fullerton to the west and south, and oasis-like El Monte to the northwest. South Gate's namesake gateway,, stands on Cahuenga Boulevard just outside its boundaries. The earliest known residents of what would become Southgate were Native American tribe members who had been living there for some time before Spanish missionaries arrived in 1692. South Gate came into being when Sutter donated his mill property to build a schoolhouse and other civic infrastructure here which he named after his hometown of Vallejo, California - now part of Northern Californian cities such as Sacramento City and Milpitas - with plans to serve an agricultural community near him while he built his mill site. The School District No 9 operated out of Southgate Elementary School until 1955 when it moved into new facilities within Fullerton Unified School District; today’s Fullerton High School opened its doors in 1957 adjacent to Agoura Hills High School across Cahuenga Boulevard from South Gate Elementary School where classes used to be held prior to moving into their current campus configuration which includes football fields bordered byAgoura Hills High Schools Academic Center/Northwestern Branch Library on one side and McClintock Park on the other side complete with softball diamond & track&baseball diamonds as well as Northridge Civic Center attached off lot next door housing offices & community center until recently home of Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Priorities

South Gate, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, located on State Route 66 about 12 miles east of Bakersfield. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in South Gate was George Clements who arrived in 1859. He and his family built a small adobe cabin on the edge of what is now town square. A post office called Southgate was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1923. For many years it was one of the few places outside Bakersfield that mail could be sent directly to other Californians. In 1895, a store and restaurant were built by Rufus Hinebaugh and Wm. Fenton on Main Street adjacent to the south gate post office building which continued to serve as a business center until it burned down in 1966. In 1911, John Tingley purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of land south of town from Hinebaugh for $10 per acre ($ million adjusted today). This landed him within walking distance (and view) of both Kern County’s new courthouse and state capital city of Sacramento as well as points north into Oregon and Washington State. As early as 1912 he began planning a community that would eventually become South Gate worth over $1 million dollars when it was platted out by him and others with help from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company This investor-owned company became one of Kern County’s earliest industries with its initial construction projects beinga water tower, schoolhouse, grain elevator and other commercial buildings. Settlement began slowly but surely due to newly developed transportation links making trips to downtown Bakersfield much easier than ever before; these include both railroads connecting South Gate with larger markets across America including Los Angeles By 1915 there were two stores/bars/grainsharing outfitters along Main Street while homes had been constructed for locals such as Mrs. Lillian Sayers who ran an apothecary shop next door right up until her death during World War II . When World War II began she donated her property back to local control so that citizens could begin repairing roads & bridges etcetera Instead they decided instead to build more housing which unfortunately led to fires shortly afterwards tearing through most structures not leaving anything standing after decades of burning efflorescence only coming back online during recent rebuilds And then there were all those saplings growing everywhere you looked! But this too would soon end . . . . The real gem though came when Interstate 5 bypassed Bakersfield entirely cutting off access from what used to be one Of Northern California’s “Gateway Towns”; suddenly people started moving here outnumbering everyone else 3-to 1 over the next few years leading some historians even believing that without I5 things might have completely fallen apart! All told though South Gate has largely managed itself despite continuous challenges posed by development There are still some original businesses like Mrs Sayers' apothecary remaining operable although their hours have been cut back considerably since she passed away nearly 30 years ago
