The city is named for South Gate Park which is located on the edge of town and includes much of South Gate's historic district. The first Europeans to visit what is now South Gate were Juan Bautista Alvarado and Pancho Villa. In 1821 Mexico received alvarado's land grant for Rancho San Pedro Santa Margarita de la Cañada de los Padres south of present day SouthGate. In 1842 Mexican General Antonio López road from Camino Real to San Diego in order to keep United States settlers out of Mexican territory while he marched his army through southern California searching for General José Garza who had abandoned Mexico City during the Mexican–American War. On October 15th 1842 approximately 300 Anglo Americans under Captain John Cushing arrived at Punta Mesa in what is now known as Northgate Canyon and set up their own post there after being refused passage by Admiral Collingwood on the USS Constitution which sailed into Mexico Bay with supplies expecting war with Mexico On February 24th 1844 Commodore George Vancouver anchored off shore at Point Mugu where he discovered oil wells that would later be developed by Northern American Petroleum Company (NAPI) and are today part of ChevronTexaco’s Refinery/Petrochemical Complex northeast corner of downtown Sebastian Martinez Boulevard across from Qualcomm Stadium between First Street and I-835 exit 78 about midway between old Qualcomm Stadium lot east side near University Avenue (First Street current route US 101) south side just past I-835 exit 78 along present day Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way north side between University Avenue (First Street current route US 101) and new Qualcomm Stadium lot east side about midway between old Snapdragon Stadium lot west side just past I-835 exit 78 southeast corner near Mission Hills intersection almost opposite Tijuana River mouth just before mouth opens up onto Gulf Of Tehuantepec About two miles long

South Gate, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population of South Gate was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pomona-Arroyo Grande Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of what is now South Gate were the Tongva people who inhabited the area from around 1800 to 1849. In 1847, Mexican American rancher Manuel Nieto donated land to the United States government for use as a military reservation named Rancho San Bernardino de los Angeles y Tejon (now called Rancho Cucamonga). The reservation was home to over 20 thousand native Californians at its peak in 1858. In 1909, South Gate became part of metropolitan Los Angeles when that city was created from parts of Orange and Riverside Counties. At that time, there were only 828 people living in South Gate. In 1930, South Gate became an incorporated town with a population of 2,062 residents; it had been granted incorporation status by then-Governor Hiram Johnson two years earlier. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were interned here during enrolment into the U.S Armed Forces during World War II; however most Koreans also served in this conflict and no Korean Americans were interned in Southgate specifically. In 1954, following passage of Proposition 13 which repealed all property tax Measure A (1954), many small businesses including those run by women and minorities closed their doors because they could not afford to continue paying taxes on their properties which totaled $10 million dollars before Proposition 13 took effect - effectively wiping out anywealthy businesses within just five years or so across Southern California’s largest city after ratification ofCalifornia statewide voter initiative #27 on November 3rd 1959 (). Many experts have argued that Prop 13's repeal caused significant economic decline throughoutSouthern California following enactment – particularly in traditionally high-tax areas such as West Hollywood and Beverly Hills where new business ventures often struggled to survive amidst a glut of low-cost alternatives springing up elsewhere due to new public investment spurred byProposition 13 implementation (). Southgate experienced some resurgence early on following passage and implementation of AB 32 thereby increasing job opportunities for local residents while creating more affordable housing options available throughout southern San Bernardino County – although these improvements have largely dissipated since then due to continued downward mobility among southern Californians despite overall growth rates nationally (). On July 15th 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom announced his intent to lyse all but 5% or so remaining funding for coastal communities threatened by climate change through SB 840 which would reduce state allocations for coastal communities by $1 billion per year beginning 2021 should CO2 levels reach 550 ppm threshold set forth under EIS ()
