In 1848 Antonio Vallejo purchased Rancho Santiago from Micheltorena for $5,000 with an option to buy it again at any time for $10,000 more; it remained in Vallejo's family until 1910 when it passed through inheritance to Harry Houdini's mother who sold it to him in 1912 In 1892 citrus farming began with Wernher von Braun planting Citrullus lanatus (strawberry) trees on about 800 acres (30 hectares) near Sylmar Boulevard and North Avenue in what is now south Beverly Hills The next year Wernher von Braun organized a citrus packing company that shipped fruit all over Southern California Some 300 miles (500 kilometers) away from where he lived Grapefruit Lands markets operated out of old military airfields near Carson City . This industry continued until World War II when air transportation became available . During Prohibition years various businesses such as "Citrusland" grew oranges but did not sell them because they were not legal under state law The last commercial orchard here closed down around 1960s The post office opened here on January 6, 1896 It was renamed SOUTH EL MONTE after Captain James Phelan who fought during the Mexican-American War as a volunteer second lieutenant with Company G Sixth Calvary Regiment California Volunteers Infantry Battalion No 4 US ARMY After returning home he organized a failed attempt to establish himself as a rancher east of Bakersfield and later established himself at this site near modern day Midway Boulevard East Princeton Avenue took its name from Captains Phelan's unit which had participated in this campaign There are numerous historic homes nearby including: First Baptist Church built 1903; Masonic Temple built 1916; Presbyterian Church completed 1915; Mrs. Lillian Smith House built 1907 also known as Rice Mansion house still standing today beside Midway Blvd.; Driggs Schoolhouse 1901 also known as Early Elmwood Schoolstill standing today adjacent toMrs Smith House; Little League Field house 1915 east side behind Mrs Smith House which served as social hall until moved downtown circa 1990s .
