The original settlers were mostly Spanish-speaking Mexicans who had immigrated to Southern California during the 1840s and 1850s looking for work on the new land that had been given to them by Mexico after its independence from Spain. Many families moved to what would become South El Monte because they could not find jobs in other parts of Los Angeles County or because they were afraid of being deported if they stayed in their home country. In 1881, José Maria García created a town site near his rancho (rural estate) called Rancho Santa Anita de los Olivos (later renamed North Hollywood). Early residents built homes from logs found near present-day Valley Boulevard and Alameda Street. In 1916, when South El Monte became an official city, García donated land east of Valley Boulevard to establish Park Row Cemetery and he also donated money for a water supply SYSTEM that eventually became known as West Side Filtration Plant #1 (now North Hollywood Recreation Area). Alhambra Township was organized on November 3, 1881 with eleven voting citizens; it consisted of only two square miles north of downtown Los Angeles at then known as Vallejo Street and lacked any boundaries other than its own limits southward along Vallejo Street including Alameda Avenue which formed the western border with Pasadena. On December 12th 1915 South ElMonte incorporation took place when all twelve original incorporations within Alhambra Township combined forming one municipality with an initial population totaling seventy five people including twenty three men and nineteen women elected through secret ballot presided over by Mayor John Pritchett . Mayor Agustín Vásquez served for four terms until his death on January 1st 1925 due to pneumonia spread throughout his office by vandals who broke into his house while he slept! For many years after this incident no public records exist about what may have happened next inside Mayor Vásquez’s home but rumors circulate that he may have been buried beneath broken glass inside his bedroom closet! Today there are more than 153K people living in SouthElMonte making it one of largest cities in County CA!
