South El Monte, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 127,514 at the 2010 census. It is the 11th largest city in Los Angeles County. The history of South El Monte can be traced back to 1871 when it was founded as a small town by Anglo-Mexican settlers. The name “El Monte” means “the mountain” and “Monterey” was an earlier name for what is now South El Monte. In 1903, the town became part of Los Angeles and its boundaries changed accordingly. In 1965, South El Monte was selected as the site for a new housing development known as Mira Mesa which had a planned population of 300,000 people but only produced 100,000 residents over three decades. This led to some local opposition to Mira Mesa and eventually resulted in it being abandoned in 2000 after it became apparent that there would never be enough jobs or homes available on the site to meet projected demand. Today, South ElMonte's downtown district remains one of Southern California's most vibrant areas complete with galleries and businesses dating back to before World War II. The city was originally named for Santiago García de la Vega, who served as sheriff of Los Angeles County from 1851-1852. It was renamed South El Monte after its incorporation into Los Angeles County in 1912. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and aircraft manufacturing plants. Between 1945 and 1949, South El Monte had an average population of 509 people per square mile (1,524 per km²). During this time period, industry started to decline but construction resumed in earnest after hostilities ended and South El Monte became known for its high-end homes and downtown district. In recent years, South ElMonte has seen significant gentrification with increasing levels of investment coming from outside sources such as real estate developers, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs looking for opportunities in a rapidly changing market. In 2013, Forbes listed SouthElMonte as one of California’s “Most Adjacent Cities To Richest Citizens” with an income tax rate greater than any other U.S. city that same year. Today’s SouthElMonte is home to some of Southern California’s most expensive neighborhoods including Koreatown (whose residents have long lobbied for their own city), Westwood Village near UCLA School Of Medicine, Pacific Palisades/Pasadena Hills areas west of Interstate 10/I-10 Freeway through Long Beach Airport boundaries (including Beverly Hills), North Hollywood/Torrance/West Covina areas east of I-710 along State Route 521/State Route 1522 (including Glendale), Downtown Santa Monica/Canoga Park area north of Interstate 585 between Van Nuys Boulevard and Canoga Park Boulevard/, La Brea Tar Pits area southwest cornerof Lankershim Boulevard between Canoga Park Boulevardand Winnetka Avenue/, Encino area northeast cornerof Ventura Boulevardbetween Reseda Boulevardand Boyle Heights., Thousand Oaks,, Brentwood,, Lynx Woodlands
In 1868, the first post office in South El Monte was established. In 1892, the first public school in South El Monte opened. In 1912, South ElMonte became a city. In 1915, the city constructed its first fire hall and library. The city also built a streetlight system in 1916 and began to provide sewer services in 1917.
