Gun swivels were first patented in South El Monte, California on October 25, 1904. The inventor of the gun swivel was John G. Wesson and his patent is number 7,859, filed on October 25, 1904. At that time, the use of firearms with a detachable magazine was new and not well known to most people. However, the gun swivel had great potential as an addition to firearm safety because it allowed firearms with magazines to be stored at different locations without having to take them apart and move them around. The weaponized version of the gun swivel was developed by George Weiser and his patent is number 3,569 application filed on March 17, 1907. This type of firearm arm slide could be attached onto any rifle or shotgun by using a hole cut in one end of the arm slide which would then fit over a stock screw located near the front of the rifles/ shotguns. The rifle/ shotgun could then be fired by rotating its barrel around its axis while keeping the arm slide attached

The town became an agricultural center with citrus groves and cattle ranches before becoming a bedroom community for downtown Los Angeles during World War II due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major highways. Its economy shifted again following the war when new industries such as aerospace manufacturing and plastics emerged; however, today South ElMonte remains an important cultural center with annual festivals such as MUSICfest and ART&FEST that draw thousands of visitors each year

It became an agricultural and ranching community with a population of around 100 in 1850. In 1892, the city of Los Angeles was founded on nearby Olvera Street, and El Monte quickly lost its importance as a rural center. However, it continued to be occupied by residents of South El Monte until 1971 when it merged with neighboring Bell Gardens into the new City of Los Angeles.
